The IV Pharmacy Technician plays a crucial role in the preparation and distribution of intravenous (IV) solutions, ensuring that the healthcare facility operates smoothly and efficiently. This position is under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and is integral to maintaining the quality of patient care.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties outline the primary responsibilities associated with this role:
- Prepare and deliver IV admixtures to designated clinical areas while adhering to established protocols.
- Manage inventory levels within the IV preparation area, including procurement of necessary supplies.
- Communicate with pharmacy procurement staff regarding specific medications and supplies required.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the IV preparation area, following all safety and hygiene standards.
- Provide accurate documentation for billing and inventory management purposes.
- Assist in compiling monthly statistics related to discarded IV solutions.
- Generate and maintain electronic records for IV medication administration.
- Handle the return of unused medications from clinical units and ensure proper restocking.
- Support the training of new team members in IV preparation techniques and inventory management.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding controlled substances.
- Conduct monthly audits of narcotic inventory and assist in inspections for expired medications.
- Prepare monthly reports on departmental charges and annual inventory assessments.
- Keep medication labeling current, including pricing and reorder levels.
- Complete necessary invoicing in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Participate in mandatory training sessions and departmental meetings.
- Exhibit flexibility in work scheduling to meet the needs of patient care.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Education and Experience
Required: Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program.
Experience: A minimum of two years in a pharmacy technician role is preferred.
Licensure
Candidates must hold a valid registration with the appropriate state pharmacy board as a Pharmacy Technician.
