Overview
The IV Pharmacy Technician II plays a crucial role in the preparation and distribution of intravenous (IV) admixture solutions at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. Under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist, this position is responsible for ensuring that 80-85% of all IV solutions are accurately prepared and delivered to various clinical units.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties outline the primary responsibilities associated with this role:
- Prepare IV admixtures under pharmacist supervision and ensure timely delivery to designated clinical areas.
- Manage inventory within the IV preparation area, including the procurement of necessary supplies.
- Communicate with the pharmacy buyer regarding special pharmaceuticals and supplies required.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the IV preparation area and Laminar Flow Hoods, adhering to established hospital protocols.
- Provide accurate documentation for billing and inventory management purposes.
- Assist the Pharmacy Director in compiling monthly statistics on discarded IVs.
- Generate and maintain accurate computer records for IV medication administration in nursing units.
- Process returns of unused medications from clinical units and restock as necessary.
- Support the training of new personnel in IV preparation techniques and inventory management.
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and hospital regulations regarding controlled substances.
- Conduct monthly inventory checks of the narcotic vault and perform random audits as required.
- Carry out monthly inspections of pharmacy stock for expired medications.
- Prepare monthly interdepartmental charge reports and an annual inventory report.
- Keep medication labeling up-to-date, including pricing and reorder levels.
- Complete necessary invoices in accordance with legal requirements.
- Participate in mandatory hospital orientations, meetings, and training sessions.
- Exhibit flexibility in work scheduling to meet patient care needs.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill the essential duties outlined above. The following qualifications are required:
Education and Experience
Minimum Required Education: Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.
Licensure
Candidates must be registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.
