Overview
The IV Pharmacy Technician II plays a crucial role in the preparation and distribution of intravenous admixture solutions at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, ensuring that 80-85% of all IV preparations are completed under the guidance of a licensed pharmacist. This position also involves the management of pharmaceutical supplies, including ordering, receiving, and maintaining inventory levels for both controlled and non-controlled substances.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties are essential to the role and may include additional tasks as assigned:
- Prepare and deliver IV admixtures to designated clinical units while under pharmacist supervision.
- Manage inventory within the IV preparation area, including procurement of necessary supplies.
- Communicate with pharmacy procurement personnel regarding special drug requirements.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the IV preparation area and Laminar Flow Hoods, adhering to established protocols.
- Provide accurate documentation for billing and inventory management.
- Assist in compiling monthly statistics on discarded IVs for departmental review.
- Maintain accurate computer records for IV medication administration in nursing units.
- Handle drug returns from clinical areas and restock unused medications.
- Support the training of new personnel in IV preparation techniques and inventory management.
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and institutional regulations regarding controlled substances.
- Conduct monthly inventory checks of narcotics and perform audits as requested.
- Carry out monthly inspections of pharmacy stock for expired medications.
- Prepare monthly interdepartmental charge reports and annual inventory assessments.
- Keep medication labeling current, including pricing and reorder points.
- Complete necessary invoicing in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Participate in mandatory orientations, meetings, and training sessions.
- Exhibit flexibility in work scheduling to meet patient care needs.
Qualifications
To excel in this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Education and Experience
Required Education: Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
Candidates must be registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician.
