Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial and follow-up interviews with clients both in-person and via phone.
  • Respond promptly to client inquiries, assess their needs, and manage a substantial caseload.
  • Collect, review, and organize educational and medical documentation pertinent to cases.
  • Advocate for clients during school meetings, including IEP discussions, whether virtual or in-person.
  • Engage in community outreach and educational initiatives.
  • Support clients during administrative hearings and school meetings.
  • Perform basic factual investigations and legal research as required.
  • Draft memorandums, letters, and standard legal documents for attorney review.
  • Maintain professional relationships with local educational institutions and social service organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with all program and grant stipulations.
  • Assist with administrative tasks as necessary.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and other relevant activities.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or an Associate's degree with a paralegal certificate from an accredited program, or equivalent experience demonstrating strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Proficient in gathering information through interviews, both over the phone and in person.
  • Ability to interact with clients in a calm and professional manner, guiding discussions towards relevant issues.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Capacity to work independently while also contributing to team objectives, ensuring timely completion of grant-related deliverables.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage individual caseloads effectively.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Fluency in Spanish, both written and spoken, is preferred.
  • Experience in client service roles, particularly in legal contexts, or familiarity with relevant laws and systems.
  • Commitment to serving low-income populations.
  • Aptitude for working with diverse communities, including effective communication with individuals facing cultural or language barriers.
  • Background in education law or educational settings is advantageous; candidates without such experience should articulate their plans for preparation if selected.

Compensation and Benefits:

The Educational Rights Advocate position is hourly, with a pay range of $22.53 to $30.77, starting at $25.28. Additional bilingual pay increases are available for proficiency in threshold languages.

LASSD offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a 35-hour workweek, paid vacation and sick leave, and full employer-paid medical premiums. Staff may also participate in a 403(b) retirement plan and flexible spending accounts. LASSD provides a loan repayment program for law school graduates and qualifies for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.
