About Mission Economic Development Agency
The Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a community-focused organization dedicated to local economic development. For over five decades, MEDA has engaged individuals, families, and small enterprises in strategies that foster community growth. With a strong commitment to the Mission District and a focus on enhancing the lives of low- and moderate-income Latino families, MEDA aims to promote economic equity and social justice through asset development and community initiatives.

About the Housing Rights Legal Advocate Role

MEDA has established the Housing Stabilization & Eviction Defense (HSED) initiative to provide culturally sensitive legal housing services to the Mission Community. To enhance our efforts, we are seeking a Housing Rights Legal Advocate to join the HSED team. This position involves working closely with clients facing housing rights challenges and eviction proceedings to prevent displacement. The advocate will collaborate with HSED legal counsel to manage the daily operations of the eviction defense service line within the Housing Opportunities Program (HOP), complementing existing housing services such as rental applications, post-lottery assistance, homeownership guidance, and rental relief. The advocate will assist clients in understanding their housing circumstances, clarifying their rights and obligations, and guiding them in making informed decisions to safeguard their household interests. Responsibilities include providing legal advice, trial representation, conducting legal research, drafting necessary documents, and maintaining up-to-date client records. The advocate will address issues such as landlord-tenant disputes, including rental rate disagreements, unpaid rent, nuisance claims, no-fault evictions, habitability concerns, subtenancy issues, and other related tenant and landlord rights matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist low and moderate-income clients with legal issues related to housing stability.
  • Evaluate legal conflicts, provide advice, and negotiate on behalf of clients.
  • Draft legal documents, including correspondence, briefs, motions, pleadings, contracts, affidavits, and settlement agreements.
  • Work collaboratively with clients, senior associates, and staff to facilitate efficient case resolutions.
  • Attend court hearings and legal proceedings, conduct legal research, and collaborate with partner organizations to offer legal guidance.
  • Prepare legal documents and correspondence for contract negotiations and proceedings.
  • Ensure effective communication with clients and staff to manage cases efficiently.
  • Conduct consultations, keep clients informed, communicate with the court, represent clients in court, and negotiate settlements.
  • Develop and refine operational procedures and policies to ensure proper handling of client cases and legal service delivery.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is required.
  • Experience working with communities of color is essential.
  • 2-3 years of professional experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Active member in good standing with the California bar.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

Strong communication and problem-solving skills are necessary to effectively engage with clients, colleagues, and senior attorneys.
