Position Overview
The San Mateo County Bar Association is seeking a dedicated advocate with two to three years of relevant experience to further the cause of voting rights in California. The Voting Rights Associate plays a vital role in the organization's Voting Rights Project, which is committed to safeguarding and enhancing the voting rights of Californians through various advocacy methods, including collaboration with fellow advocates and election officials, legislative and administrative advocacy, strategic communications, and litigation.

Key Responsibilities
Your primary focus will be on promoting voting rights and reforming campaign finance within California. This includes:

  • Improving compliance with the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), ensuring that historically marginalized communities, such as people of color, individuals with disabilities, and low-income residents, have the opportunity to participate fully in the democratic process.
  • Advancing publicly financed elections in the Bay Area to create a more equitable environment for candidates.
  • Evaluating existing policies and best practices, crafting actionable recommendations, and fostering relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Writing reports and serving as a resource for community organizations, as well as organizing local events and meetings.
  • Supporting the implementation of new reforms, including California's vote center model and automated registration, while seeking to enhance accessibility for voters with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in policy research, development, or advocacy.
  • Proven experience in policy development and advocacy, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional relationship-building abilities and a talent for inspiring collaboration.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to finding solutions.
  • Experience working with and advocating for underrepresented communities.
  • Strong project management skills, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • The ability to work independently while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
  • A willingness to travel as needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications
Additional qualifications that would be advantageous include:
  • A J.D. or advanced degree.
  • Experience in voting rights policy or advocacy.
  • Experience in campaign finance reform policy or advocacy.
