Job Overview

An Import & Export Specialist is essential in managing the logistics and regulatory compliance associated with international trade. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all imported and exported goods adhere to the legal and regulatory standards of the respective countries. The specialist collaborates with various stakeholders, including suppliers, customers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and government entities, to ensure the efficient and timely delivery of shipments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Classification and Compliance: Accurately classify imported goods using Harmonized Tariff Schedule codes while staying informed on any updates to tariffs and HTS codes.
  • Tariff Management: Ensure precise tariff classifications to reduce import duties and taxes.
  • Policy Monitoring: Keep abreast of changes in import policies, regulations, and trade agreements impacting the U.S.
  • Documentation Preparation: Prepare and manage all necessary import and export documentation, including invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and customs declarations.
  • Logistics Coordination: Oversee international transportation and logistics, including selecting freight forwarders, negotiating rates, and scheduling shipments.
  • Customs Clearance: Facilitate customs clearance by providing accurate documentation and liaising with customs authorities.
  • Issue Resolution: Address customs-related issues such as duty payments, inspections, or holds to prevent shipment delays.
  • Broker Coordination: Work with customs brokers or agents to expedite clearance processes when necessary.
  • Shipment Tracking: Monitor and track shipment status, communicating with relevant parties to resolve any issues or delays.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to the laws and regulations of both origin and destination countries, as well as international trade agreements.
  • Shipping Optimization: Research and recommend optimal shipping methods, routes, and carriers, negotiating rates and contracts with service providers.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of all import and export transactions, preparing reports and analyses as required.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement opportunities for cost reduction, process enhancement, and increased customer satisfaction.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in International Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in import and export operations.
  • Experience managing import and export projects, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Proficient in coordinating international trade operations, including customs clearance and logistics.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and U.S. import regulations.
  • Familiarity with international trade laws, customs procedures, and documentation across various countries.
  • Understanding of trade regulations, tariffs, and duties in different markets.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and other relevant software systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Experience in import and export operations within the Automotive Industry.
