Overview of the Role

Under the direct supervision of a Lead Journeyman Lineman or Crew Supervisor, the Electric Apprentice engages in entry-level tasks assisting linemen with the construction, upkeep, and repair of power distribution networks. The apprentice will also support team members in coordinating the activities of operational and maintenance staff to ensure safe, efficient job execution with high-quality outcomes. All work will be subject to close inspection.

Key Responsibilities

Initiate the certification process for the four-year correspondence studies of the City of Edmond Electric Department's Lineman Apprenticeship Training Program. Assist team members in the operation and maintenance of the current distribution system and the construction of new distribution infrastructure. Conduct tasks under close supervision on non-energized circuits for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the power distribution system. Begin learning to climb poles or operate in the bucket of a truck-mounted boom to construct, maintain, and repair distribution power lines. Acquire knowledge of construction standards, code requirements, and specifications. Understand and adhere to safety programs and requirements for the department. Start learning to read and interpret electrical power circuit plans and specifications. Continue learning the methods, practices, and equipment used in electrical line maintenance, installation, and service across all areas of the electric distribution system. Learn about the methods, materials, and tools utilized in power line construction. Maintain tools, equipment, and materials while preventing loss or damage.

Required Qualifications

Education and experience equivalent to four years of high school or a GED equivalent. 7 to 11 months of relevant experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess (or be able to obtain within thirty (30) working days) a valid Class "A" Oklahoma Commercial Driver's License with necessary endorsements. Driving record must be acceptable to the City's insurance provider.

Essential Skills

Willingness and capability to perform standby duties. Availability for call-back during off-duty hours. Ability to meet the physical standards required for this position. Capability to pass extensive background checks and pre-employment drug, physical, and audio screenings.
