# Project Description:

Bechtel is engaged in the design, construction, and commissioning of the largest radioactive-waste treatment facility for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington State. This initiative employs advanced vitrification technology to manage and stabilize a significant volume of radioactive and chemical waste, a legacy of historical plutonium production.

This ambitious cleanup project represents one of the DOE's most complex undertakings, comparable to the construction of two nuclear power plants. The site encompasses 65 acres and includes various facilities dedicated to waste treatment and analysis.

Positions at the construction site involve shift work, including 12-hour rotating shifts covering nights, weekends, and holidays.

# Role Summary:

As an Environmental Shift Representative, you will play a pivotal role in embedding environmental considerations into project planning, permitting, design, construction, commissioning, and operational phases. Your expertise will be crucial in providing technical guidance on environmental mitigation efforts, participating in emergency response initiatives, and conducting thorough inspections to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

# Key Responsibilities:

**Level 1**

  • Facilitate the execution of the environmental segment of an ESH Program, encompassing both technical and administrative functions.
  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of Environmental Management Plans and associated procedures.
  • Support the integration of environmental mandates into all phases of project execution.
  • Interpret environmental regulations and offer guidance for effective program execution.
  • Conduct research on regulatory requirements and prepare necessary documentation.
  • Engage in environmental permitting processes and assessments related to site conditions and community impact.
  • Participate in emergency response activities and contribute to incident investigations.
  • Engage with stakeholders, including customers and regulatory agencies, to ensure alignment on environmental objectives.
  • Perform inspections and environmental monitoring to identify risks and confirm compliance with all applicable standards.
  • Provide insights on environmental mitigation strategies and sustainability practices.

**Level 2**

  • Support the environmental component of an ESH Program, focusing on both technical and administrative aspects.
  • Collaborate with various teams to ensure environmental requirements are seamlessly integrated into project planning.
  • Assist in environmental permitting and risk assessments, considering site and community factors.
  • Conduct inspections and monitoring to evaluate compliance and effectiveness of mitigation measures.

# Qualifications:

**Level 1**

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, field biology, or natural resources with 1-2 years of relevant experience, or 5-6 years of applicable work experience.

**Level 2**

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, field biology, or natural resources with 2-5 years of relevant experience, or 6-9 years of applicable work experience.

# Required Skills:

  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening, physical, and background checks.
  • Strong understanding of Washington state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Field compliance knowledge relevant to Dangerous Waste, Air, and Wastewater regulations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, with a strong team-oriented approach.
  • Accountability for timely completion of work assignments.
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft applications.
  • Practical experience in field environments, particularly in construction or operational settings.

**Preferred Qualifications:**

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Experience in the nuclear sector for commercial or DOE projects.
  • Familiarity with state and federal dangerous waste regulations.
  • Experience in facility start-up and commissioning activities.
  • Adaptability to urgent project needs and shifting priorities.
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated capacity to collaborate with diverse teams.
