# Project Overview:

Bechtel is engaged in the design, construction, and commissioning of the largest radioactive-waste treatment facility for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington State. This project employs advanced vitrification technology to manage and stabilize 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste, a legacy of historical plutonium production.

This extensive cleanup initiative represents one of the DOE's most complex challenges, akin to constructing two nuclear power plants. The site encompasses 65 acres and includes various facilities for waste treatment and operational support.

Positions at the construction site involve shift work, with 12-hour rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays.

# Role Summary:

As an Environmental Shift Representative, you will play a crucial role in embedding environmental standards into project planning, permitting, design, construction, commissioning, and operational phases. Your expertise will guide environmental mitigation efforts, facilitate emergency response actions, and conduct inspections to ensure compliance with contractual, regulatory, and organizational standards.

# Key Responsibilities:

**Level 1**

  • Assist in executing the environmental aspects of an ESH Program, covering both technical and administrative duties.
  • Support the development and implementation of Environmental Management Plans and associated procedures.
  • Integrate environmental requirements into project phases, including planning and execution.
  • Interpret environmental regulations and provide guidance for effective program execution.
  • Conduct research on regulatory requirements and prepare necessary documentation.
  • Assist with environmental permitting and assessments related to site conditions and community impact.
  • Engage in emergency response activities and contribute to incident investigations.
  • Participate in discussions with stakeholders, including customers and regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct inspections and environmental monitoring to identify risks and assess compliance.
  • Provide guidance on environmental mitigation and protection of sensitive areas.

**Level 2**

  • Support the execution of the environmental component of an ESH Program.
  • Contribute to ensuring environmental requirements are integrated within project planning and execution.
  • Assist with environmental permitting and risk assessments.
  • Conduct inspections and monitoring to confirm compliance with regulations and project requirements.

# Education and Experience Requirements:

**Level 1**

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, field biology, or natural resources with 1-2 years of relevant experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience.

**Level 2**

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in environmental sciences, field biology, or natural resources with 2-5 years of relevant experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience.

# Required Skills:

  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening, physical, and background checks.
  • Strong knowledge of Washington state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Field compliance expertise to support Dangerous Waste, Air, and Wastewater regulations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a collaborative approach.
  • Accountability for timely completion of assignments.
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft applications.
  • Practical experience in field environments, particularly in construction or operational settings.

**Preferred Qualifications:**

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry for commercial or DOE projects.
  • Familiarity with dangerous waste and transportation regulations.
  • Experience in facility start-up and environmental integration.
  • Ability to adapt to urgent project needs and changing priorities.
  • Capability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
