Position Title: Paraeducator - 1:1 Custodial Care

Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Director of Student Services and School Principal

Required Qualifications:
- Associate's Degree or equivalent (60 college credits) or successful completion of the Parapro Exam prior to employment
- Experience with children is preferred

Overview:

The Paraeducator - 1:1 Custodial Care plays a crucial role in supporting the educational experience of students with disabilities. This position is dedicated to providing tailored assistance to a student with specific needs, ensuring their physical and instructional requirements are met within both special and general education settings.

Key responsibilities include managing student behavior, maintaining accurate records, assisting with instructional tasks, ensuring classroom safety, and fostering positive interactions with students.


Core Competencies:
- Strong communication skills with parents, colleagues, and students
- Ability to effectively engage with children with disabilities
- Understanding of the diverse needs of students, particularly those with unique learning challenges
- Knowledge of classroom management and child development principles
- Capacity to demonstrate flexibility, sound judgment, and common sense
- Skills in following both oral and written instructions
- Ability to identify and de-escalate challenging behaviors
- Proficiency in supporting students in achieving their Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals
- Reliability and punctuality are essential

Responsibilities:

- Provide one-on-one support to students, reinforcing lessons introduced by the teacher and promoting independence
- Monitor and assist students in various classroom settings to help them complete tasks and stay focused, in accordance with their IEPs
- Accompany students during necessary outings from the classroom
- Assist in both large and small group activities
- Support the teacher in preparing instructional materials and operating classroom equipment
- Help implement behavior and social skills programs
- Participate in the development of new educational materials as needed
- Conduct routine clerical tasks to support classroom operations
- Understand and adhere to all transportation protocols
- Receive training in de-escalation and physical management techniques, which may include physical restraints
- Utilize technology for tracking student behavior and progress
- Maintain a focus on student needs, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment
- Uphold ethical standards and confidentiality regarding student information
- Build supportive relationships with students while maintaining authority
- Report any issues or special information to the teacher or administrator
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Consistent attendance is required

Physical Requirements:

The role requires the following physical capabilities:

- Ability to reach, lift, stand, walk, carry, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, sit, and crawl
- Capacity to assist in lifting or carrying students weighing over 50 pounds
- Occasional exposure to varying weather conditions

Employment Terms:

Salary and work year will be determined by the contract between the Norwich Board of Education and the Municipal Employees Union "Independent".


Performance Evaluation:

Job performance will be assessed in accordance with the Board's evaluation policies for support services.
