Reports To: Director of Student Services and School Principal

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree; or
  • Two years of college (60 credits); or
  • Pass on Parapro Exam prior to employment

General Overview: The role of the Individualized Support Paraeducator is to assist the classroom teacher in the educational development of students while addressing the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. This includes managing student behavior, maintaining records, providing instructional support, ensuring classroom safety, and fostering communication with students. The paraeducator will deliver personalized support and care to a student with specific requirements within the educational setting. Responsibilities include aiding with daily activities, personal hygiene, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the student throughout the school day.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:
  • Effective communication skills with parents, colleagues, and students
  • Ability to work collaboratively with children with disabilities
  • Understanding of the unique needs of all students, particularly those with different abilities
  • Knowledge of classroom management and behavior principles
  • Awareness of child development stages and potential developmental delays
  • Flexibility, common sense, and sound judgment
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions
  • Skills in identifying and de-escalating negative behaviors
  • Experience in supporting students in achieving Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals
  • Punctuality and reliability are essential
Responsibilities:
  • Support individual and small groups of students to reinforce learning and promote independence
  • Monitor and assist students in various classroom settings to complete tasks and stay focused, providing accommodations as outlined in IEPs
  • Accompany students during necessary outings from the classroom
  • Assist in both large and small group activities
  • Help the teacher prepare instructional materials and operate classroom equipment
  • Support the implementation of behavior and social skills programs
  • Contribute to the development of new educational materials as needed
  • Assist with routine clerical tasks for the teacher
  • Demonstrate knowledge of transportation procedures, including early and late dismissals
  • Receive training in de-escalation and physical management techniques (training will be provided)
  • Utilize technology for tracking student behavior and data
  • Maintain regular attendance to ensure smooth district operations
  • Assist with specific health needs of students as required
  • Foster a caring, safe, and developmentally appropriate environment
  • Uphold a high standard of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students
  • Establish supportive relationships with students while maintaining authority
  • Notify the teacher or administrator of any issues or special information
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

The following physical demands are representative of those required for this position: reaching, lifting, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
  • Ability to move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom items
  • Must be capable of assisting in lifting/carrying students weighing over 50 pounds
  • Occasional exposure to varying weather conditions
Terms of Employment: Salary and work year will be determined by the contract between the Norwich Board of Education and the Municipal Employees Union "Independent".

Evaluation: Performance will be assessed in accordance with the Board's evaluation policy for support services.
