Position Summary:


Under the guidance of the DL Hematology Leadership, the Genetic Counseling Support Specialist (GCSS) offers specialized assistance to the Diagnostic Hematology Team, which includes the Hemostasis Reference Lab, Molecular Oncology Genetics Lab, and Platelet & Neutrophil Immunology Lab. This role encompasses sample management, laboratory inventory assistance, and sample evaluation and requisitioning.

Additionally, leveraging academic and clinical knowledge in relevant areas, this position acts as an extension of the Genetic Counseling team, executing tasks related to laboratory stewardship, clinical history acquisition, client-focused communication, and case coordination support.


Responsibilities:
Ensures the integrity and identification of samples, manages specimens appropriately, and assesses specimens for testing suitability. Collaborates with clients to resolve any sample, documentation, or ordering discrepancies as necessary.


Provides daily assistance to the DL Hematology team by updating and maintaining workflow management tools and accurately performing data entry tasks in relevant systems.


Initiates daily laboratory stewardship activities, identifying orders that require follow-up, and, under the oversight of genetic counselors, communicates stewardship considerations to referring clients and providers.

Collaborates with a diverse team to ensure a dependable and efficient process for managing client-requested order modifications based on cost-effectiveness and clinical utility.


Handles client inquiries via calls and emails, communicating directly with clients in consultation with genetic counselors, medical directors, and lab directors, in a timely manner and within the scope of responsibilities.

Participates in report preparation, extracting and summarizing clinical histories from client-provided information, and drafting summaries and recommendations as appropriate.


Collects and organizes data, resources, and literature related to relevant genes, variants, and test results to assist the DL Hematology team in composing or revising externally facing reports and materials.

Supports clients in coordinating genetic studies of family members to clarify variant classifications.

Performs additional duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of this job classification.

Understands and adheres to all applicable regulatory and compliance standards.

Complies with all standard operating policies and procedures.

Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in life sciences or a related field is required.

Previous or planned application to Genetic Counseling graduate programs is preferred.

Experience: Previous volunteer or work experience in a customer- or patient-facing environment is required.

Previous work or internship experience in a medical or laboratory setting is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required.

Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and data entry skills with attention to detail, speed, and accuracy are required.

Willingness to collaborate with team members, internal customers, clients, and referring providers is required.

Motivated to acquire and share increasing knowledge of high-complexity laboratory testing is required.

Demonstrated interest in or knowledge of clinical genetics/genetic counseling, such as previous or planned application to Genetic Counseling graduate programs, is preferred.

Tools and Technology: Proficiency in using personal computers (desktop, laptop, tablet) is required.

Familiarity with general office equipment (computer, printer, fax, copy machine) is required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) is required.

Trained access to laboratory information systems and software, such as Cerner and Gene Insight, is required.
