New York, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Job Overview

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities. The Center aims to proactively address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems through various initiatives—developing and implementing programs that minimize incarceration and foster economic opportunities, conducting original research to identify effective strategies, and disseminating insights gained from our work to those seeking to reform the justice system globally.

The Center operates with a workforce of 900 and an annual budget of $100 million, achieving its mission through three core pillars: creating and scaling operational programs to test innovative ideas and address systemic issues, conducting original research to evaluate effectiveness, and offering expert assistance and policy guidance to justice reform advocates worldwide.

Operational Programs

The Center's operational programs, such as the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, explore innovative solutions, tackle complex challenges, and strive for systemic reform within the justice framework. Our initiatives encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry programs, and court-based strategies aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while promoting positive change for individuals and families. These efforts have yielded measurable outcomes, including safer neighborhoods, decreased incarceration rates, and improved community perceptions of justice.

Research Initiatives

The Center's research teams consist of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals, all of whom are either academically trained or possess lived experience. They conduct research on a wide array of issues within the criminal-legal system both domestically and internationally. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, conducting exploratory studies within communities, and providing research translation and strategic planning for stakeholders. The Center has published studies on various topics, including court and jail reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, gun violence, reentry, sixth amendment rights, and progressive prosecution. The research teams aim to ensure their findings are meaningful and actionable for the communities they serve, as well as for policymakers and practitioners.

Policy and Expert Support

The Center offers hands-on planning and implementation support to diverse jurisdictions in reform areas such as problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and crime. Our expert assistance encompasses data analysis, strategic planning, policy guidance, and facilitating site visits to our operational programs.

Support Services

A dedicated support team within the Center guarantees the efficient operation of various functions, including finance, legal, technology, human resources, fundraising, real estate, and communications. Comprising 15% of the organization’s workforce, these teams provide essential infrastructure support and innovative solutions aligned with the Center's mission and values.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Center is looking for a skilled and empathetic professional to fill the role of Employee Relations Specialist within the People team. This position involves managing employee grievances, disputes, and performance-related issues, ensuring equitable treatment and adherence to organizational policies and employment regulations. The role also focuses on preventative measures by delivering training to managers and supervisors on performance management and communication strategies, while serving as a resource for both management and the People Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Address employee grievances and potential breaches of the Center's policies;
  • Conduct workplace investigations, including complaint intake, planning, interviewing, report writing, and communicating investigation outcomes;
  • Establish and implement follow-up plans for investigations and related matters;
  • Maintain and oversee administrative record-keeping associated with workplace investigations;
  • Serve as a resource for managers and staff regarding Employee Relations processes, policies, and best practices;
  • Deliver exceptional customer service by being proactive and responsive to employee inquiries;
  • Design and facilitate training sessions for managers on feedback delivery and communication techniques;
  • Engage with staff at program site locations to strengthen relationships;
  • Collaborate with the Legal Team on investigations and employee relations matters post-transition to the People Department;
  • Assist with additional projects as required;
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Bachelor's degree;
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as an HR Generalist or in a related HR role, including 3-4 years of experience in conducting investigations related to employee complaints, particularly concerning Equal Employment Opportunity, Anti-Harassment, and Violence-Free Workplace policies;
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills, a collaborative approach to problem-solving, exceptional organizational and analytical abilities, and the capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong independence, prioritization skills, the ability to efficiently manage multiple projects, maintain confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Position Type: Full-Time.

Location: Hybrid, with a requirement of approximately three days onsite each week.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience. The Center for Justice Innovation offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, dental coverage, vision insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, and flexible spending accounts. We prioritize mental health support for our staff and provide services through our healthcare plans. A 403(b) retirement plan with a generous employer contribution is also available.
