Position Overview

At Dennis Group Springfield, our Civil Engineering team specializes in land development and infrastructure for industrial projects, particularly in the food and beverage sector. Our engineers possess strong technical and design capabilities, complemented by excellent communication skills, to create effective land development plans, building foundations, and essential infrastructure. As part of our Building Systems department, civil engineers collaborate closely with structural engineers and architects, engaging in bid evaluations and initial contractor interactions across various project sites. This role is crucial within our organization, presenting engineering challenges that necessitate robust analytical skills and, for seasoned professionals, a Professional Engineer License (PE).

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize standard methodologies and criteria to execute assigned tasks within broader projects.
  • Handle moderate design assignments, seeking guidance for complex issues and adapting techniques as necessary.
  • Prepare comprehensive project documentation, including detailed CAD drawings.
  • Conduct procurement activities such as developing bid lists, initiating contractor contact, and performing preliminary bid evaluations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of discipline-specific plan elements and navigate project drawings effectively.
  • Engage in construction administration tasks, including complex submittal reviews and responding to RFIs.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for small to mid-sized projects.
  • Develop site basis of design documents and edit project specifications.
  • Create parking lot layouts that comply with development regulations.
  • Analyze and design sites for institutional, industrial, and commercial buildings.
  • Review historical site drawings to ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Understand pavement materials and design pavement sections.
  • Determine land use characteristics and assign runoff coefficients.
  • Perform pre-development hydrologic analyses for simple sites.
  • Delineate complex watersheds and model them appropriately.
  • Formulate design approaches considering topography, drainage conditions, and site constraints.
  • Design detention ponds and outlet control structures to meet discharge rates.
  • Advance site grading using Civil 3D software.
  • Conduct trust restraint calculations for pressure systems.
  • Apply knowledge of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for erosion and sediment control.
  • Prepare storm drainage reports and engineering calculations.
  • Develop land development plans, including site grading and utility design for food and beverage processing facilities.
  • Review drawings and coordinate with the project team.
  • Prepare bid packages and oversee construction administration.
  • Compile a list of potential bidders.
  • Visit project sites to assess field conditions.
  • Evaluate design constraints and resolve engineering challenges.
  • Research civil engineering materials and industry best practices.
  • Support talent development within the organization.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to junior team members as directed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in civil engineering tasks related to industrial construction projects.
  • Extensive experience in drainage, grading, and utility design for industrial or commercial projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for at least 7 years.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
  • Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
  • Capability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 15% travel may be necessary for site visits and inter-office meetings.
