Bend Park and Recreation District is the leading provider of childcare services for school-aged children in Central Oregon. Collaborating with local schools, our program offers families exceptional afterschool and care services on non-school days.

Position Responsibilities:

The Youth Activity Coordinator plays a vital role in guiding classes and facilitating engaging activities. You will connect with young participants through age-appropriate crafts, games, and other organized events.

Daily Responsibilities Include:

  • Leading classes or recreational activities while ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment.
  • Developing daily plans for classes and activities in accordance with established guidelines and curriculum.
  • Monitoring the safety, comfort, and development of participants.
  • Modifying activities as necessary to accommodate individual abilities and needs.
  • Preparing necessary equipment, materials, and supplies for activities.
  • Setting up, taking down, and cleaning up after sessions as required.
  • Completing necessary documentation, including class records and progress reports.
  • Communicating effectively with the public, providing accurate information related to your role, and addressing inquiries from parents and participants.
  • Responding to incidents and accidents in accordance with established procedures.
  • Acting as a Mandatory Reporter; reporting any incidents of child abuse or neglect.

Program Details:

Our program operates five days a week, offering 15-21 hours of work per week.

Typical Work Hours:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM

Wednesday: 12:30 PM to 5:30 PM

Qualifications for Success:

Essential Knowledge:

  • Fundamental principles of recreation activity planning, class management, and leadership techniques.
  • Effective methods for teaching skills relevant to the position.
  • Basic principles of youth development.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Plan, lead, and instruct designated recreational activities.
  • Understand participant needs and adapt activities accordingly.
  • Encourage and motivate participants through positive reinforcement.
  • Demonstrate skills essential for teaching.
  • Work independently within a structured framework.
  • Engage effectively with a diverse range of participants.
  • Communicate in a clear, tactful, and pleasant manner with the public and colleagues.
  • Establish and maintain respectful and cooperative relationships with all stakeholders.

What We Seek:

Education and Experience:

  1. Minimum age of 16 years; AND
  2. Currently enrolled in high school or possess a high school diploma or equivalent; AND
  3. Some prior work, training, or volunteer experience related to the position; OR
  4. A satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training.

Certifications:

  1. Some roles may require CPR/First Aid certification, which can be obtained through on-the-job training.
  2. Additional certifications related to the position may also be required and provided through on-the-job training.

Supervisory Duties:

This position does not include supervisory responsibilities; however, it may involve providing guidance to volunteers and entry-level staff. The role operates under the general supervision of a supervisor, receiving ongoing direction from lead and supervisory personnel.

Work Environment:

  • Depending on the assignment, duties may be performed indoors or outdoors, with potential exposure to varying environmental conditions.
  • Work hours may vary and could include early evenings and holidays.
  • Physical demands include walking, standing for extended periods, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Work may involve exposure to large groups, challenging individuals, and periods of high demand.
