Position Overview

Applicants must have completed a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy within the last 36 months or be currently enrolled to qualify for this role.

This role involves serving at the Palm Springs Police Department, focusing on law enforcement duties such as safeguarding individuals and property, crime prevention, traffic management, and performing various technical and administrative functions to support the Police Department.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducting patrols in designated areas to maintain law and order and deter criminal activities; enforcing traffic laws and local ordinances.
  • Responding to public service requests and incidents involving crime victims, traffic issues, and related misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Planning, executing, and serving search warrants; searching individuals, vehicles, residences, and premises for evidence and missing persons.
  • Executing arrest warrants; apprehending individuals for offenses under penal codes; performing booking procedures for new detainees; interviewing witnesses for additional information.
  • Processing and securing evidence and property from crime scenes; maintaining records and entering data into systems as required.
  • Investigating organized crime and gang-related activities within assigned areas; gathering intelligence and preparing cases for prosecution.
  • Reviewing and investigating vehicle thefts and accidents.
  • Conducting various investigations related to assigned responsibilities, including narcotics and crimes against persons and property; collecting witness statements and preparing reports.
  • Testifying in court proceedings; preparing and submitting court documentation.
  • Operating specialized police surveillance equipment, including radios and cameras.
  • Participating in training sessions and exercises; addressing inquiries and concerns; staying updated on crime trends and innovative policing methods.
  • Performing specialized duties related to assigned responsibilities, including SWAT, K-9, bicycle, and mounted units.
  • Assisting other divisions and investigators in related tasks.
  • May take on a leadership role in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Providing information to the media; conducting interviews for public awareness.
  • Carrying out related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Experience
Completion of a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy within the last 36 months is required. No prior experience is necessary.

Education
A High School Diploma or equivalent, along with completion of a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy, is required.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
  • Completion of a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy within the last 36 months is required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid C.P.R. Certificate is required.
Additional Requirements
  • Must not be related to any current employee of the Palm Springs Police Department.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must reside within a one-hour driving distance from the Palm Springs Police Department.
  • Must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, including a criminal history check, fingerprinting, polygraph screening, credit check, psychological evaluation, and drug screening.
Working Conditions
This position operates in an emergency services environment, requiring travel between locations and exposure to potentially hazardous situations. Physical fitness is necessary for various activities, including running, standing, and driving for extended periods.
