Job Summary

UPMC is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Medical Assistant to support the OB/GYN department in Mechanicsburg. This is a full-time position that requires a strong background in medical assisting and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist management staff with supervisory activities and participate in the creation and implementation of departmental goals, processes, and procedures.
  • Work directly with the Manager to identify opportunities for improvement in clinical and non-clinical functions, infection control procedures, and patient assessments.
  • Guide routine meetings with staff to communicate procedural changes and improve service quality and patient safety.
  • Responsible for sending and receiving patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other state and federal regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, and referral information.
  • Complete forms and requisitions as needed.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Perform front office responsibilities, including cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits.
  • Manage inventory of supplies and restock exam/procedure rooms.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, and preparing for exams.
  • Collect patient information/history and take vitals and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Provide individualized patient/family education and supportive counseling as needed.
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information, including patient education, as directed.
  • Administer injectable medication and vaccines under the direction and supervision of a physician.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and document patient information into the medical record.
  • Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies, including OSHA, CLIA, and the PA Department of Health.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data.
  • Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) or successful completion of a certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) or at least 1 year of patient care experience required.
  • Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category specific tasks.
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities.

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
