Parks and Natural Lands Coordinator Job Description

The Town of Blacksburg, VA is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Parks and Natural Lands Coordinator to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a wide range of projects related to natural resource conservation, open space management, and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the development of a system-wide Natural Resources/Lands Management Plan to guide the future stewardship of the Town's open spaces, natural lands, and natural surface trails.
  • Collaborate with other Town departments and community/regional stakeholders to implement stewardship/management goals and projects.
  • Identify technical advisors to guide the development of a system-wide plan.
  • Support multi-year action plans for open space and natural resources management, including invasive species management, forest and riparian area management, and habitat restoration on priority sites.
  • Support trail planning and maintenance in collaboration with community and regional partners and volunteers.
  • Identify opportunities for public land/trail acquisition and access, including easements.
  • Engage the public on natural lands management goals and initiatives to better communicate how the Town is working to conserve and restore its natural assets.
  • Elevate cultural and historic features on the landscape through workshops, community partnerships, and interpretative site elements.
  • Develop budgets and provide oversight and coordination of contracted and volunteer labor as needed for project implementation.
  • Write grants and applications and assist with finding funding.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED certification required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Environmental Resources Management, Geography, or a related field and at least three to five years of related experience in natural resource conservation, open space management, environmental stewardship, and public outreach.
  • Experience in operation of heavy equipment.
  • First-aid certification and pesticide application license.
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Physical Requirements:
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, and reaching with hands and arms.
  • Frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, and repetitive motions.
  • Occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, and lifting.
