Job Description/Major Responsibilities:
  • Conducts crisis intervention, brief therapeutic sessions, triage, resource development, and disposition recommendations for behavioral health patients within the Emergency Department and Medical Center, utilizing both in-person and telehealth modalities as necessary.
  • Delivers specialized care to patients requiring psychological evaluations or interventions that exceed standard patient care practices, including assessments of mental status, psychosocial stressors, functioning levels, risks, support systems, strengths, and needs.
  • Engages in ongoing patient rounds, employing solution-focused therapy and collaborative problem-solving to stabilize patients in crisis.
  • Utilizes short-term crisis intervention techniques and/or referrals to additional support services to assist patients and families coping with acute emotional distress, addiction issues, grief, loss, disabilities, and significant lifestyle changes.
  • Creates discharge and safety plans in direct collaboration with patients, families, physicians, and the healthcare team, coordinating necessary arrangements for implementation.
  • Facilitates the admission process to the inpatient psychiatric unit as required.
  • Ensures patients are pre-certified for the recommended level of care.
  • Communicates effectively with Emergency Department staff, medical units, Behavioral Health Services, and human service agencies to gather all pertinent patient information, refer patients, and consult with colleagues regarding patient progress to ensure optimal care.
  • Participates in unit meetings, training sessions related to departmental changes or enhancements, and educational opportunities.
  • Adheres to applicable state and federal regulations governing patient care and the handling of sensitive information, including the Illinois Developmental Disability and Mental Health Code, the Illinois Confidentiality Code, HIPAA, and EMTALA.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work hours within the department and cross-trains for related roles and responsibilities to meet departmental needs.
  • Ensures accurate data collection for billing, management information systems, and other organizational purposes in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Licensure:

Minimum LSW, LPC required.

Candidates who are pursuing licensure may be considered, contingent upon obtaining the minimum licensure within a specified timeframe upon hire.

Education/Experience Required:
  • Master's Degree in behavioral health sciences or a related field, with at least two years of experience in a mental health or similar environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Ability to function effectively under stressful conditions and in challenging situations, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills; familiarity with techniques for de-escalating aggressive behavior. High tolerance for emotionally charged situations frequently encountered with psychiatric and substance abuse patients.
  • Skills in risk assessment, psychotherapy, and family/group treatment, along with knowledge of behavioral health referrals and resources.
  • Understanding of DSM-V diagnostic categories.
  • Awareness and education regarding typical developmental patterns across the lifespan (e.g., recognizing normal adolescent behavior and signs of aging); prior experience with diverse age groups is preferred.
  • Basic computer proficiency and typing skills; strong organizational and time management abilities.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions and in challenging environments; potential exposure to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases; knowledge of universal precautions is essential. Operates within and supports a shared governance model. Customer-focused approach. Transporting patients may be necessary. May occasionally encounter violent situations and may be involved in restraining patients.
  • If the position involves direct patient care or contact, the following lifting requirement applies: Ability to lift up to 35 pounds unaided. For patient lifts exceeding 35 pounds, or when the patient is unable to assist, patient handling equipment should be utilized, with assistance from at least one other associate when available. Unique patient lifting/movement scenarios will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
