Job Overview:

Senior Child Welfare Investigator

This role, guided by a child placement supervisor, entails performing sophisticated social work related to protective services, intake, child maltreatment investigations, foster care, and adoption processes.

Responsibilities include assessing situations of family emotional and/or physical distress that may lead to child maltreatment.

Regular interactions are expected with Texas Department of Family and Protective Services personnel, clients, representatives from various organizations, and the general public.

Key Responsibilities:

Conducts investigations into allegations of child abuse or neglect to evaluate current or potential risks to children by interviewing parents, family members, and other relevant individuals; examining children; assessing home conditions; and collecting necessary information from various sources.


  • Determines necessary actions to mitigate immediate threats to child safety, which may include testifying in court for emergency protective services, placing children in alternative care, or referring families for urgent crisis intervention therapy or other community resources.
  • Inputs contact details, documentation, and narratives into the Information Management Protecting Adults and Children System within mandated agency timelines.
  • Cultivates and sustains effective working relationships with Child Protective Services staff, law enforcement, judicial officials, legal resources, medical professionals, and other community entities.
  • Participates in training sessions, meetings, and staff discussions.
  • Maintains a specialized investigative role and serves as a liaison with medical facilities. Develops and nurtures relationships with healthcare staff. Acts as a bridge between Child Protective Services and Hospital Staff. Engages in discussions with medical personnel regarding concerns related to Child Protective Services. Performs additional duties as required to support unit operations while ensuring confidentiality with medical records and personnel matters.

  • Adheres to regular attendance in accordance with agency leave policies.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with child development principles.

  • Understanding of family dynamics.
  • Knowledge of Child Protective Services policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Competence in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer effectively.
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate with other professionals in the community.
