Job Overview:

Senior Child Protection Investigator

This role, under the guidance of a child placement supervisor, engages in comprehensive social work pertaining to protective services, intake, child maltreatment investigations, foster care, and adoption processes.

The responsibilities include assessing appropriate interventions to address family emotional and/or physical stressors that may lead to child maltreatment.

This position requires regular interaction with staff from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, clients, representatives from various organizations, and the broader community.

Key Responsibilities:

Conducts investigations into allegations of child abuse or neglect to evaluate current or potential risks to children by interviewing parents, family members, and other relevant individuals; examining and interviewing children; assessing the home environment; and collecting relevant information from various sources.


  • Determines necessary actions to mitigate immediate threats to child safety, which may include testifying in court to request emergency protective services, placing children in alternative care, or referring families for urgent crisis intervention therapy or other community resources.
  • Inputs contact details, documentation, and narratives into the Information Management Protecting Adults and Children System within the mandated agency timelines.
  • Fosters and maintains productive working relationships among Child Protective Services staff, law enforcement, judicial officials, legal representatives, medical professionals, and other community resources.
  • Participates in training sessions, meetings, and staffings.
  • Maintains a specialized investigative role and acts as a liaison with medical facilities. Cultivates and sustains relationships with medical personnel. Serves as a bridge between Child Protective Services and hospital staff. Engages in discussions with medical staff regarding concerns related to Child Protective Services. Performs additional duties as required to support unit operations while ensuring confidentiality of medical records and personnel matters.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of child development principles.

  • Familiarity with family dynamics.
  • Knowledge of Child Protective Services policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in establishing and nurturing effective working relationships.
  • Competence in both verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer effectively.
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate with other professionals in the community.
