GENERAL NATURE OF WORK

This position involves skilled responsibilities within a county correctional facility. The individual in this role is tasked with overseeing inmates and ensuring their safety and compliance. The work is conducted under close supervision, requiring regular direct interaction with the inmate population. Candidates must be eligible for firearms certification to carry a weapon during inmate transport. It is essential for Deputy Jailers to be prepared to respond to potentially hazardous situations with the appropriate level of force to maintain order. Awareness of exposure to infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens is crucial due to the nature of the work. This role demands a high level of physical fitness to effectively manage uncooperative inmates and cope with the physical and psychological stresses associated with the position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  1. Review previous shift logs and conduct a population count at the start of each shift.
  2. Maintain a detailed log of all shift activities; manage incoming inmates in the jail management system, complete necessary forms, secure personal belongings, facilitate inmate phone calls, assign cells or detox areas, and file inmate information appropriately.
  3. Conduct regular checks of inmate cells to monitor conditions and activities as mandated by state regulations.
  4. Manage the release and return of inmates participating in work release programs.
  5. Oversee housekeeping tasks performed by inmates, including meal preparation, laundry, and cleaning duties.
  6. Process outgoing inmates in the jail management system, including completing forms, returning personal items, managing bonds, handling funds, and issuing receipts.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency in making routine calculations and tabulations accurately and efficiently.
  8. Transport inmates to medical facilities, dental appointments, or court as necessary.
  9. Provide guard duty at medical facilities when required.
  10. Serve and file warrants as needed.
  11. Monitor the two-way radio system utilized by fellow Deputy Jailers and observe visual and audio surveillance throughout the facility.
  12. Respond to telephone inquiries from the public.
  13. Work effectively under general supervision.
  14. Distribute personal items to inmates, including toiletries, uniforms, and linens.
  15. Collect and manage incoming mail daily.
  16. Supervise the distribution of canteen products to inmates on designated days and oversee recreation and visitation schedules.
  17. Inspect cells for contraband as necessary.
  18. Perform related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  1. Completion of high school or equivalent education, with the ability to read and write basic English, complemented by experience in inmate supervision or a combination of relevant experience and training.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  2. Completion of twenty-four (24) hours of on-site training annually.
  3. Maintain a level of physical fitness adequate for job performance.
  4. Pass criminal, medical history, and employment background checks.
  5. Possess or be able to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  6. Must be bondable.
