Legislative Affairs Specialist

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a prominent global law firm with a robust team of over 900 attorneys across various regions, including the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. We are in search of a Public Policy Specialist to join our Public Law & Policy practice, working under the guidance of designated attorneys, advisors, or practice management.
This position will be based in our Washington, DC office and will focus on addressing the requirements of the Public Law & Policy practice. The Public Policy Specialist is expected to execute all duties with a dedication to delivering exceptional service to the firm's attorneys, advisors, and staff, while fostering a collaborative environment and a culture of continuous improvement. Most importantly, the Public Policy Specialist must meet the firm's needs in alignment with its Core Values.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the legislative process and Capitol Hill, establishing and nurturing essential relationships as necessary.
- Stay informed about pending legislation, industry developments, and current events that may affect clients and potential clients.
- Attend and provide summaries of Congressional hearings.
- Conduct thorough, time-sensitive research and compile findings effectively.
- Draft materials for clients, including talking points, articles, briefings, alerts, letters, and other memoranda.
- Organize and/or participate in meetings with members of the Public Law & Policy team, clients, and Congressional representatives or their staff.
- Monitor and report on media coverage relevant to clients and their interests.
- Assist in client development efforts, including conducting research and collaborating with business development on presentations and proposals.
- Review and proofread the work of colleagues.
- Perform other legislative support tasks as required.
Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
- Bachelor's degree is required.
- Fundamental knowledge of the legislative process is essential.
- Experience in political or campaign environments is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Familiarity with political and legislative frameworks.
- Understanding of regulatory and administrative processes.
- Proficiency in Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong research and writing capabilities.
- Comfort with video conferencing platforms, such as Zoom.
- Ability to work proactively and show initiative.
- Capacity to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize effectively under pressure.
- Ability to collaborate in a team environment with peers and supervisors.
- Good judgment and a strong sense of responsibility, integrity, and loyalty.
