Position Overview:

The Director of the Office of Policy and Legislation (OPL) plays a pivotal role in overseeing a team of legal professionals, policy experts, and data analysts dedicated to conducting comprehensive research and analysis on critical legal, policy, and legislative matters as directed by senior leadership within the Division and Department.

The OPL team is responsible for monitoring and interpreting data related to crime, prosecution, and sentencing across various jurisdictions, ensuring that senior management is kept apprised of significant trends and emerging issues.

This role serves as a key liaison with various Department components, federal agencies, and state and local law enforcement entities, facilitating collaborative analytical studies and research on shared interests in the realm of criminal justice.

The Director is tasked with developing and refining operational protocols to enhance legislative processes, including the management of feedback mechanisms and tracking systems to oversee legislative reviews.

In addition, the Director oversees the examination and response to all matters from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that require OPL's review and endorsement.

Key responsibilities include coordinating the assessment of legislative proposals, draft testimonies, administration position statements, and inquiries on behalf of the Division.

The Director will establish and uphold a proactive legislative agenda to equip the Division and its law enforcement partners with essential legal instruments to fulfill their objectives.

This position involves advocating for legislative initiatives aimed at combating violent crime, drug trafficking, white-collar crime, cybercrime, and other Department priorities.

Furthermore, the Director provides analytical and legal support to the Department's representative on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, aiding in the formulation of a departmental agenda and coordinating responses to proposed guideline amendments.
