About the Department:

The Student Success Coaching unit within the Division of University Life serves as a central resource for engaging new freshman and transfer students. This unit is dedicated to enhancing the retention and academic performance of students by guiding them in setting and achieving their educational, career, and personal objectives while connecting them to vital campus and community resources.

About the Position:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the Student Success Advisor offers comprehensive support to a designated group of incoming students throughout their first year and beyond, utilizing the university's established framework across nine developmental focus areas: academic alignment, community integration, commitment management, effectiveness, graduation dedication, career exploration, financial literacy, civic engagement, and overall well-being.

The Advisor plays a crucial role in supporting students' career aspirations in addition to their academic pursuits. Training in coaching methodologies is provided to all new Advisors. Responsibilities include delivering success strategies, managing outreach initiatives, and addressing student concerns to bolster retention rates. This role is integral to the university's mission of fostering career-ready graduates and enhancing graduation and retention statistics.

Evening and weekend hours may be required, particularly during the summer months.

The Student Success Coaching unit is evaluating candidates for either a Student Success Advisor I or II position. Applicants for the Advisor II role must possess a coaching credential recognized by the International Coaching Federation, while those without such credentials will be considered for the Advisor I position.

Key Responsibilities:

Coaching:

  • Facilitates daily operations and student support, ensuring holistic coaching is delivered through the university's chosen methodology across nine developmental areas.
  • Assists students in exploring career options and aligning their academic pursuits to achieve their goals while identifying and overcoming barriers to success.
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of university policies, procedures, and resources relevant to first-year students.
  • Success Advisor II: Addresses complex issues escalated from Success Advisor I.

Student Impact and Outreach:

  • Monitors student progress, identifies challenges, and implements intervention strategies.
  • Conducts meetings with students to provide success strategies and manages outreach efforts to support diverse academic and personal development needs.
  • Collaborates with Academic Advisors and other university stakeholders to enhance student success.
  • Participates in university events and is required to be present on campus as necessary.
  • Provides timely and accurate referrals for students in need of additional support.
  • Follows up with at-risk students identified through relevant surveys.

Training and Technology:

  • Engages in foundational coaching training and ongoing professional development.
  • Utilizes the university's platform for tracking student interactions and referrals.
  • Success Advisor II: Provides mentorship and support to Success Advisor I.
  • Completes the post-certification quality assurance program with satisfactory performance.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional experience, typically one or more years, in areas such as academic advising, success coaching, or related fields.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of student transitional issues and customer service principles.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.

Success Advisor II:

  • Professional experience typically two or more years in relevant areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Prior experience in academic advising or student coaching programs.
  • Familiarity with educational database management systems and CRM.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, communication, program development, and administrative skills.
