About the Position
The College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University seeks applicants to fill a temporary position as an Academic Advising Assistant to work with undergraduate and graduate students in special education and assistive technology programs.
Responsibilities
- Interface with students regarding degree requirements, application deadlines, registration, program information, and general student inquiries;
- Advise graduate and undergraduate students on academic requirements, programs-of-study, and administrative procedures;
- Create academic course plans for students and use the Navigate Mason system to book and report on appointments;
- Maintain timely and accurate student records in accordance with Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations;
- Provide timely and accurate follow-up communication with students and stakeholders;
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure superior customer service;
- Provide advisor support at orientations and recruitment events.
Required Qualifications
- Outstanding professional oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to manage sensitive and/or confidential student information;
- Familiarity with George Mason University policies and systems, including Patriot Web and Degree Works;
- Computer literacy and the ability to achieve proficiency with Ellucian Banner and Salesforce;
- Proven ability to work positively as a team member;
- Customer service experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using INB/Banner student management system;
- Understanding of the Navigate Mason system;
- Familiarity with academic actions including form processing and catalog policies;
- Previous college/university admission, enrollment, or transfer advising experience.
