Position Overview: The Youth Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for delivering specialized outpatient services and counseling for adolescents involved with the Juvenile Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct individual, group, and family counseling sessions tailored for youth.
  • Complete all necessary treatment documentation for assigned individuals.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records of interactions to track progress.
  • Administer random urinalysis screenings for assigned youth.
  • Provide support to staff by fulfilling various duties such as administering medications, transporting youth to appointments, conducting intake assessments, and managing disciplinary actions.
  • Participate in ongoing training and meetings to remain informed about advancements in the substance abuse sector.
  • Deliver educational sessions on substance abuse, including topics like HIV/AIDS and tobacco awareness.
  • Conduct home visits as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science, Corrections, Education, or a related field, along with at least one year of experience working with at-risk youth.

Special Requirements:

  • Must obtain certification as a Juvenile Probation Officer within six months of hire; a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in standard software applications is essential.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation is required.
  • Mandatory drug testing will be conducted prior to employment and randomly throughout employment.

Work Environment: The role may involve working in a 24-hour facility, which could require mandatory overtime or extended shifts. The incumbent may also be classified as essential personnel, subject to being called back to work as needed.

Physical Requirements: The position may require physical abilities such as restraining or pursuing youth and navigating various locations.

Bilingual candidates are preferred.
