Job Summary

As a Substance Abuse Counselor with Dallas County, you will play a critical role in providing substance abuse counseling and specialized outpatient services for youths under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct individual, group, and/or family counseling for youths to address substance abuse issues and promote positive behavior.
  • Complete treatment documents required for all assigned youths, maintaining accurate and detailed records of interactions and progress.
  • Perform random urinalysis screening of assigned youths to monitor substance use and adherence to treatment plans.
  • Assume backup duties as necessary, including administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.
  • Participate in training and meetings to stay current on trends and innovations in the substance abuse field, providing education on HIV/AIDS and tobacco prevention.
  • Conduct periodic home visits to support youths in their treatment plans and provide additional support as needed.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Behavioral Science, Corrections, Education, or a related field of study.
  • Experience: One year of work-related experience working with at-risk youths.
  • Special Requirements:
    • Must be a Certified Juvenile Probation Officer within six months of hire and a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) preferred.
    • Knowledge of standard software applications.
    • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
    • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record.
    • Must pass an extensive background investigation and undergo random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
