Position Overview
A Research Scientist position in the domain of Synthetic Biology is open within a project focused on the Bottom-Up Engineering of a Synthetic Living System, led by Dr. Zhanar Abil in the Department of Biology. This role involves engaging in (1) the Engineering and Evolution of Self-Replicating Transcription and Translation systems and (2) the Exploration of a Minimal Genetic Decoding System capable of Self-Regeneration, Self-Amplification, and Evolution.
Research Focus
Our research initiatives are primarily directed towards the engineering of cell-free processes that emulate the cyclically catalytic characteristics of living organisms. To accomplish this, we will develop in vitro autocatalytic gene circuits operated by a tailored cell-free transcription-translation system within artificial compartments that resemble cells. We will investigate their collective biopolymer synthesis, evolutionary dynamics, adaptability, and integration into more complex networks. This research aims to yield significant insights into fundamental biogenic processes, such as the biogenesis of ribosomes, translation factors, and energy regeneration complexes, which are challenging to study in vivo.
Lab Environment
The Abil lab was established recently and is equipped with cutting-edge shared instruments for synthetic biology endeavors. The Research Scientist will play a crucial role in shaping the lab's culture and infrastructure, spearheading new projects, mentoring students, and advancing their career in various research dimensions.
Qualifications
Eligible candidates must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemical or biomolecular engineering, systems or synthetic biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or related fields. We seek individuals with expertise in molecular biology techniques and synthetic biology tools, particularly in cell-free systems.
A robust publication record demonstrating research productivity and the capability to independently design and execute experiments is essential. The position necessitates excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey research findings, collaborate with colleagues, and mentor junior team members.
Position Duration
This position will initially be awarded for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to two or three additional years, contingent upon strong performance and funding availability.

The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package.
