Position Overview
Dr. Ayako Makino's laboratory is in search of a highly skilled and driven scientist to become a vital member of our translational research team, focusing on cardiovascular pathophysiology and vascular cell biology. Our investigations delve into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying coronary vascular complications associated with Diabetes and Kawasaki Disease, as well as pulmonary vascular pathobiology related to Pulmonary Hypertension. The successful candidate will undertake a variety of essential tasks that support our impactful research initiatives, which include conducting complex experiments and assays.
Key Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will demonstrate independence within the research team, leveraging extensive expertise and sound judgment to strategize and meet defined objectives within research projects. The role demands a high degree of creativity and flexibility, alongside a thorough understanding of our research themes, laboratory principles, practices, and protocols. The successful applicant will serve as a lead investigator on one of our ongoing projects. Specific duties will include:
- Executing advanced cardiac and vascular physiological experiments both in vivo and ex vivo, as well as electrophysiological assessments using isolated vascular cells from murine models. This encompasses the isolation of coronary and pulmonary endothelial cells, exosome extraction from human and mouse blood, dissection of small arteries for isometric tension studies, and evaluation of cardiac and vascular function using specialized systems.
- Conducting molecular biological experiments, including but not limited to Western Blot, PCR, qPCR, and FACS.
- Collaborating with fellow researchers to maintain lab operations, manage research documentation, and oversee the transgenic mouse colony.
- Handling data acquisition and analysis, preparing grants and manuscripts, and presenting findings during regular lab meetings.
- Providing mentorship and training to visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, guiding them in the design and execution of molecular biological experiments.
Expected Salary:
$62,550 to $70,000 annually, depending on experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. and/or MD in a relevant scientific discipline is required, along with a minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- In-depth theoretical and practical knowledge in advanced cardiovascular physiology.
- Proficiency in aseptic techniques for cell culture.
- Demonstrated ability to dissect small arteries for isometric tension experiments and isolate vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cells.
- Experience with Western Blot, immunoprecipitation, PCR, qPCR, and FACS.
- Ability to contribute to experimental design, data analysis, and troubleshooting.
- Experience in writing scientific manuscripts and collaborating effectively in physiological and molecular biological research.
- Strong time management skills to efficiently plan and organize work assignments.
- Experience working with animal models and human tissues.
- Familiarity with specialized software such as SnapGene, GraphPad, EndNote, and MS Office Suite.
- A genuine enthusiasm for learning and a strong interest in scientific research, with a willingness to acquire new skills and methodologies.
