Position Overview
The New York Public Library is seeking dedicated Lead Tutors for its After School initiative, designed to offer complimentary, drop-in academic assistance and enrichment activities for children in elementary school across various library branches.
This role involves working 16 hours per week, specifically on Monday to Thursday afternoons, with shifts spanning approximately 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Lead Tutors will engage with children aged 6-12, facilitating group and individual academic support in a vibrant library setting.
As a key member of the program staff, Lead Tutors will be responsible for creating an inviting atmosphere for children to receive help with their homework and participate in enriching activities. The program operates on a walk-in basis, allowing children to attend as they wish.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the daily homework assistance service at designated library locations during program hours.
  • Engage and assist children in academic tasks and enrichment activities in a welcoming environment.
  • Provide tailored academic support in various subjects, including math, reading, and science.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, providing information about the program and additional resources.
  • Handle administrative duties such as tracking attendance and managing program supplies.
  • Collaborate with library staff to share insights and address challenges.
  • Design and implement creative enrichment activities that foster a love for learning.
  • Guide and mentor youth volunteers from the Teen Reading Ambassadors program.
  • Participate in meetings and training sessions to enhance professional development.
  • Carry out other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in an undergraduate program with at least two years completed.
Experience:
  • Experience working with children or teens in educational settings.
  • Background in teaching or tutoring across elementary subjects.
Skills:
  • Strong communication skills with children and adults.
  • Ability to multitask in a dynamic library environment.
  • Solid understanding of elementary academic concepts.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Google Apps and Microsoft Office.
