Position Overview
The New York Public Library is seeking dedicated Lead Tutors for its After School initiative, designed to offer complimentary, drop-in academic assistance and enrichment activities for children aged 6-12 at various library locations.
This role entails working 16 hours weekly, specifically on Monday through Thursday afternoons, with shifts scheduled between approximately 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
Lead Tutors will serve as the primary staff members at their assigned locations, facilitating engaging academic support and enrichment activities during peak after school hours. The program operates on a walk-in basis, allowing children to participate freely each day.
In your application, you will indicate your preferred locations for work. It is essential to arrive at the selected locations by 2 PM on designated workdays. Lead Tutors will primarily be stationed at one library but may be required to assist at nearby branches as staffing needs dictate.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the daily academic assistance service at designated locations during weekdays (Monday-Thursday) from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
  • Engage children aged 6-12 in academic support and enrichment activities on a walk-in basis during busy after school hours.
  • Provide individualized and group support to students across various subjects, including math, reading, social studies, and science.
  • Communicate program details and expectations to parents and caregivers, directing them to branch staff for further resources.
  • Handle administrative duties such as maintaining student attendance records and organizing program materials.
  • Collaborate with branch and central staff to share feedback and address challenges and successes.
  • Design and implement captivating enrichment activities that foster a love for reading and learning.
  • Offer guidance and model effective practices for youth employees from the Teen Reading Ambassadors program.
  • Assist the Children's Librarian and other branch staff with library programs.
  • Participate in regular meetings and training sessions to enhance professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired Education & Certifications
  • Bachelor's degree OR
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program with at least two years completed at an accredited institution.
Required Experience
  • Experience working in educational settings with children and/or teens.
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring across elementary subjects.
Required Skills
  • Effective communication and engagement skills with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt in a dynamic library environment.
  • Strong grasp of basic elementary concepts in math, science, ELA, and social studies.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Google Applications and Microsoft Office Suite.

Managerial Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance and model best practices for co-tutors and youth colleagues.
