Position Overview
The New York Public Library is seeking Senior Education Facilitators for its After School initiative, which offers complimentary, drop-in academic assistance and enrichment activities for school-aged children across various library locations. The facilitators will engage in a part-time role, working 16 hours per week, Monday through Thursday afternoons, with shifts scheduled between approximately 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Additional hours may be necessary for staff meetings and professional development sessions. All facilitators will participate in training workshops prior to the program's commencement.
Key Responsibilities: Travel regularly to different After School program sites to provide essential support in the absence of regular staff. Maintain proactive communication with program supervisors and branch colleagues to facilitate timely travel assignments. Deliver daily homework assistance at various program locations during weekdays. Engage with children aged 6-12 in both individual and group settings during peak after school hours. Provide academic support across various subjects, including math, reading, social studies, and science. Share program details and expectations with parents and caregivers, directing them to branch staff for further assistance. Assist with administrative tasks such as tracking attendance and managing program supplies. Offer feedback and highlight successes and challenges to branch and central staff. Design and implement engaging enrichment activities that foster a love for reading and learning. Guide and mentor youth employees from the Teen Reading Ambassadors program. Collaborate with the Children's Librarian and other staff to support library programs. Attend meetings and training sessions to promote professional development. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in an undergraduate program with at least two years completed. Experience working in educational settings with children or teens. Proficiency in teaching or tutoring across elementary subjects. Strong communication skills to effectively engage with children and their families. Ability to multitask in a dynamic library environment. Familiarity with basic computer applications, including Google Apps and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency in a second language applicable to the program setting.
