Position Overview
The New York Public Library is seeking dedicated Lead Tutors for its After School initiative, designed to offer complimentary, drop-in academic assistance and enrichment activities for children aged 6-12 at various library locations.
Lead Tutors will be responsible for engaging students in a supportive environment, providing academic help across multiple subjects including math, reading, and science.
These positions require a commitment of 16 hours per week, specifically during weekday afternoons, with shifts scheduled between approximately 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
As key staff members, Lead Tutors will facilitate group and individual learning experiences, ensuring that children receive the necessary support to thrive academically.
Participants in the program are welcome to attend on a walk-in basis, fostering an inclusive atmosphere for all students.
Lead Tutors will be assigned to a primary library location but may also assist at nearby branches as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise daily academic support services at designated library locations during the program hours.
  • Engage and assist children in their homework and enrichment activities.
  • Provide individualized and group support across various elementary subjects.
  • Communicate program details to parents and caregivers, directing them to additional resources as necessary.
  • Manage administrative responsibilities, including tracking attendance and organizing program materials.
  • Collaborate with library staff to enhance program delivery and share insights on student progress.
  • Design and implement creative enrichment activities that promote a love for learning.
  • Support and mentor youth employees from the Teen Reading Ambassadors program.
  • Participate in meetings and training sessions to ensure continuous professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in an undergraduate program with at least two years completed.
Experience:
  • Previous experience in educational settings, working with children or teens.
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring across elementary subjects.
Skills:
  • Strong communication skills with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic library environment.
  • Solid understanding of elementary academic concepts.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Google Apps and Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fluency in a second language applicable to the program setting.
