POSITION OVERVIEW:

Objective: The Learning Experience Observation Program aims to cultivate a profound comprehension of pedagogical practices through collaborative analysis and enhancement between educators and learners. This initiative pairs students (observers) with faculty members to collaborate throughout an academic term. The program's objectives include:
  • Enabling faculty and students to investigate inquiries related to pedagogy in a supportive manner to refine and enhance effective instructional methods.
  • Encouraging transparent, critical, and constructive discussions between faculty and students to promote quality teaching.
  • Transforming the culture at The Claremont Colleges to normalize and encourage dialogues about pedagogy among faculty and students.
Learning Experience Observers are students tasked with observing a faculty member's course and engaging in weekly discussions to offer insights and constructive feedback. Observers will receive continuous support and training from The Claremont Colleges Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The following are the primary duties and responsibilities that the incumbent must be capable of performing:

Attend the observed class and participate in weekly meetings with faculty and CTL personnel. Communicate effectively, maintain an open mindset, and exercise non-judgment. Document detailed observations during each class session, which will serve as the foundation for weekly discussions with the faculty partner. Evaluate and provide feedback on asynchronous elements of the educational environment (e.g., online platforms, syllabi, discussion forums, assignment guidelines). Maintain communication with CTL staff and fellow observers throughout the semester. Uphold confidentiality regarding all observations made in collaboration with CTL staff and faculty partners. Perform additional related tasks as required.

REQUIREMENTS

The following qualifications are essential for performing the key responsibilities of this position, or the individual must demonstrate how these responsibilities can be fulfilled (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other qualifications not listed below.

Education: Must be currently enrolled in and attending a degree program at one of The Claremont Colleges (graduate or undergraduate), with a minimum standing of sophomore.

Experience: This is an entry-level position, and prior experience is not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to foster positive and effective working relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, electronic databases, and timekeeping systems.
  • Able to learn new technology as required.
  • Ability to engage positively with a diverse community of colleagues, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Capacity to acquire new skills and procedures for enhancements and changes to services offered.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of race, culture, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and experience related to equity, diversity, and justice in higher education.
Work Schedule: This part-time position typically requires four to eight (4-8) hours per week, scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the academic semester. Flexibility to work during holidays, weekends, and/or evenings may be necessary. Regular hours may vary based on organizational needs.
