POSITION OVERVIEW:

Objective: The Learning Experience Observation Program aims to cultivate a profound comprehension of educational practices through collaborative analysis and enhancement between educators and learners. This initiative pairs students (observers) with faculty members to engage in a semester-long partnership. The program's objectives include:
  • Enabling faculty and students to investigate teaching and learning inquiries in a supportive manner to refine and advance effective instructional methods.
  • Encouraging transparent, constructive dialogue between faculty and students to promote exemplary teaching.
  • Transforming the culture at The Claremont Colleges to normalize and encourage discussions about teaching and learning among faculty and students.
Learning Experience Observers are students tasked with observing faculty-led classes and meeting weekly to share insights and constructive feedback. LEOs will benefit from continuous support and training provided by The Claremont Colleges Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and responsibilities are essential for this role:

Attend observed classes and weekly discussions with faculty and CTL personnel. Maintain clear communication, approach situations with an open mindset, and exercise judgment. Document detailed observations during each class session, which will inform weekly discussions with the faculty partner. Analyze and provide feedback on asynchronous components of the educational environment (such as learning management systems, syllabi, discussion forums, assignment guidelines, etc.). Engage with CTL staff and fellow LEOs throughout the semester. Uphold confidentiality regarding all observations shared between CTL staff and faculty partners. Execute additional related tasks as required.

REQUIREMENTS

The following qualifications are necessary to fulfill the essential functions of this position, or the individual must demonstrate how these functions can be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using alternative qualifications not listed below.

Education: Must be currently enrolled in a degree program at one of The Claremont Colleges (graduate or undergraduate) and be at least a sophomore.

Experience: This is an entry-level position; no prior experience is necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • High emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the capacity to foster positive working relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Punctuality, reliability, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, electronic databases, and timekeeping systems.
  • Willingness to learn new technology as required.
  • Ability to positively engage with a diverse community of colleagues, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Capacity to learn new responsibilities and procedures for service enhancements and changes.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of race, culture, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity and experience with issues related to equity, diversity, and justice in higher education.
Work Schedule: This part-time position typically requires four to eight (4-8) hours per week, scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the academic semester. Flexibility may be needed for holiday, weekend, and/or evening hours. Regular hours may vary based on organizational needs.
