POSITION SUMMARY: The Alfond Youth and Community Center is seeking a passionate individual with a love for plants and children. This full-time role involves a balance between supporting the school-age childcare program and managing the garden initiative. As part of the gardening duties, you will maintain and nurture the gardens and growing areas, contribute fresh produce to various kitchen programs, and develop educational activities. In the childcare aspect, you will guide children through after-school activities and help them adapt and thrive within the program's framework.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Garden and Greenhouse Management:

  • Assist in the acquisition, organization, and upkeep of materials, resources, and plants necessary for a thriving garden and greenhouse. This program provides vegetables for community kitchen initiatives and youth programs.
  • Oversee garden maintenance at the main facility, including community and youth program gardens.
  • Lead educational activities for groups of children in the garden, engaging up to 13 children in hands-on experiences with nature, food, and outdoor education.
  • Support the planning and execution of the Annual Seedling Sale each spring.
  • Participate in events and plant sales, fostering enthusiasm for gardening among children.

After School Program Duties:

  • Manage a group of thirteen children, aiding their social development and integration within the program.
  • Design and implement a daily curriculum tailored for children.
  • Assist children in various activities, serving as a positive role model.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong communication skills and a solid understanding of youth development principles.
  • Personality traits that inspire confidence, trust, and respect among peers and community members.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of organic gardening practices.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; formal education in horticulture or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in managing a productive garden and greenhouse, with familiarity in various growing techniques.
  • Willingness to pursue training or certification in safety or OSHA standards.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

WORK SCHEDULE: This is a full-time position with flexible hours based on the garden program's needs. Some weekend hours may be required, with childcare hours primarily in the afternoons, except during school breaks or closures.
