Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter & Services is recognized as one of Maine's most progressive and inclusive emergency shelters. Our facility accommodates 48 individuals and operates with a low-barrier approach, welcoming all, including those facing challenges such as addiction, mental health issues, or a history of incarceration. POSITION SUMMARY:

The individual in this role is tasked with ensuring a secure, welcoming, and positive environment for all residents. This position involves overseeing guests and volunteers, ensuring adherence to shelter policies and procedures. Responsibilities include conducting intake for emergency guests, assigning and completing routine maintenance tasks, preparing nutritious evening meals or delegating this responsibility to volunteers and guests, and managing donations received by the shelter. The Shelter Attendant collaborates with the Homeless Shelter team to effectively address the needs of residents and contribute to the community's efforts in preventing homelessness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and guide guests and volunteers to maintain a safe and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Establish and uphold professional boundaries in interactions with guests, staff, and the public.
  • Assess and respond to emergency situations appropriately.
  • Prepare nutritious evening meals or oversee meal preparation by volunteers and guests, ensuring food safety and cleanliness in the kitchen.
  • Document guest information accurately to facilitate effective case management.
  • Maintain detailed shift notes and incident reports to ensure continuity between shifts.
  • Conduct shift transitions, including necessary walk-throughs and completion of overnight duties.
  • Monitor guest smoking areas to ensure compliance with shelter policies.
  • Ensure all guests are signed in and out promptly, securing all valuables as per policy.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Ensure compliance with shelter policies among guests and volunteers.
  • Handle phone inquiries and distribute mail to guests as necessary.
  • Assist guests with laundry services and manage bedding for absent guests.
  • Prepare breakfast meals when required, ensuring adherence to food safety practices.
  • Participate in food safety training and uphold sanitation standards during meal preparation.
  • Conduct intake for emergency guests, documenting all necessary information.
  • Complete assigned maintenance tasks during shifts.
  • Facilitate house meetings and manage schedules for kitchen help and guest duties.
  • Provide childcare assistance as needed during Day Shelter hours.
  • Act as a liaison with community service providers as necessary.
  • Document and acknowledge donations received by the shelter.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings.
  • Exhibit a positive and professional demeanor with guests, colleagues, and community members.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are essential:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma with relevant coursework; supervisory or leadership experience is advantageous.

EXPERIENCE: Experience working with individuals facing mental health and substance abuse challenges, along with a foundational understanding of homelessness and its underlying causes.

SKILLS: Strong administrative, organizational, and planning abilities; proficiency in interpreting regulations and procedures; excellent communication skills; strong interpersonal and critical thinking capabilities; ability to maintain confidentiality; adept at multitasking and working independently; flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights and weekends.
