Position Overview:

The Arizona Attorney General's Office, specifically within the State Government Division/Public Law Section (PLS), is on the lookout for an Assistant Attorney General to act as an Independent Legal Consultant for various boards, commissions, and councils under the State Government Division.
This role offers the possibility of Remote Work two days a week.

This position is designed for full-time remote work within Arizona, including virtual office arrangements. Alternatively, it may allow for remote work within Arizona, depending on the department's operational needs and the consistent achievement of performance standards.

Many State personnel engage in the State's Remote Work Program, enabling them to work from home, in offices, or in hoteling spaces. All work, including remote tasks, should be conducted within Arizona unless a prior exception is duly authorized.

Key Responsibilities:

The Assistant Attorney General in this role primarily delivers independent legal counsel to boards, commissions, and councils that require assistance from an attorney outside their regular legal representation. The need for independent legal guidance typically arises during hearings or when a board evaluates a recommended decision in a case. The Independent Legal Consultant frequently supports health profession and occupational licensing boards.
Additionally, the Independent Legal Consultant will provide legal advice and representation to PLS client agencies as assigned. The Public Law Section represents a diverse array of state agencies and boards involved in sectors such as financial regulation, tourism promotion, military affairs, and natural resources management. The attorney's responsibilities will encompass drafting legal documents, presenting arguments and evidence at hearings across various tribunals, and managing related appeals; offering legal advice on a range of public law matters; conducting legal research; and reviewing contracts. The attorney will collaborate with the lead Assistant Attorney General who evaluates and recommends rules packages submitted for approval.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

- Comprehensive understanding of relevant statutes, case law, and court regulations, both state and federal.
- Familiarity with administrative rules and regulations.
- Proficiency in Open Meetings Law and other public law domains.
- Expertise in case preparation for administrative hearings and civil litigation.
- Strong skills in legal analysis, research, writing, oral presentation, and negotiation.
- Ability to clarify complex legal concepts to non-attorney directors and staff of client agencies.
- Capacity to conduct thorough legal research on intricate legal questions.
- Proficiency in analyzing challenging legal issues and applying legal principles and precedents.
- Competence in presenting factual statements, legal arguments, and evidence clearly and logically in both written and oral formats.
- Ability to deliver presentations to non-attorney audiences on legal and administrative topics.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, sound judgment, and adherence to high ethical and professional standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience in representing government entities.
- Background in litigation.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

- Travel is a requirement for this position. A valid Arizona Driver's License is necessary, along with consent for periodic driving record checks.
- Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is essential (please include the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states on your resume). Candidates must possess an active Arizona State Bar license.
- Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile. The writing sample should analyze a substantive legal issue and demonstrate the candidate's ability to think critically and advocate for a specific position.
- All applicants under serious consideration for employment with the Attorney General's Office must undergo fingerprinting and a criminal background check through State and Federal agencies. A job offer cannot be extended until the candidate successfully passes the initial background check. Factors such as age at the time of the offense and the nature of the offense in relation to the job will be considered.
