About the Organization:

The Florence Project, established in 1989, addresses the representation crisis for low-income non-citizens detained at various Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities.

Currently, we offer essential services to numerous adults, youth, and children detained across multiple locations in Arizona.

In 2001, we launched our Integrated Social Services Program, pioneering efforts in this sector.

Our organization is dedicated to providing exceptional legal and social services while advocating for significant reforms in immigration law and policy.

Core Responsibilities:

The Advocacy Attorney will collaborate with the Advocacy Team Managing Attorney and other colleagues to represent clients in the Federal District Court of Arizona on cases involving the Federal Tort Claim Act, Freedom of Information Act, Mandamus, Habeas, and additional district court matters.

This role may also require representation before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals when necessary.

Moreover, the Advocacy Attorney will participate in national advocacy initiatives, including client identification in partnership with other legal advocacy organizations, strategic appeals, comments on proposed regulations, and media outreach.

The position includes mentoring Florence Project staff on complex cases and providing training on various legal matters to both staff and the community.

Key Duties:

Case Management and Mentorship:

Manage an active caseload of intricate cases in the District Court, the Ninth Circuit, and the Board of Immigration Appeals (as required), including filing administrative complaints when necessary.

Offer mentorship and guidance to staff working on district court cases or other challenging legal matters.

Guidance includes reviewing drafts, providing constructive feedback, and consulting on legal strategies.

Attend all team meetings and training sessions, stay informed on case statuses, and remain updated on civil and immigration law.

Ensure compliance with ethical standards, maintain client confidentiality, and avoid conflicts of interest.

Keep thorough and accurate case notes and client records, prepare timely statistical reports, and conduct quarterly case audits.

Participate in training on immigration procedures and may lead training sessions as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

Contribute to the development and implementation of special projects or presentations.

Perform other administrative tasks as required.

Qualifications:

J.D. and admission to any state bar required. If not licensed in Arizona, must commit to applying for a waiver to practice in Arizona under specific provisions.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience providing direct representation to immigrants in removal proceedings or related experience.

Other relevant legal experience may be considered. Experience supervising staff or interns is preferred, along with the ability to inspire confidence and support others.

Demonstrated commitment to advocating for low-income immigrant clients respectfully and empowering them is essential.

Strong litigation experience, oral advocacy skills, legal research abilities, and interpersonal skills are required.

Must be highly organized, innovative, and capable of working in high-volume environments with limited resources.

Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively is crucial.

Must exhibit high ethical standards and maintain confidentiality.

Travel is a requirement for this position, and a valid driver's license and reliable transportation are necessary.

Advocacy Engagement:

Regularly communicate with staff regarding emerging trends and issues related to District Court representation and other advocacy initiatives.

Collaborate with national organizations on advocacy efforts, including amicus briefs and federal court litigation.

Work with partner organizations and staff to address significant trends affecting vulnerable immigrant populations.

Gather relevant data and information for advocacy purposes and stay informed on legal changes.

Participate in outreach and fundraising activities as necessary and develop relationships with community partners.

Support organizational outreach and development activities as needed.

Perform other administrative duties as required.
