Position Overview:
This role functions as a senior legal aide, providing paralegal assistance for intricate litigation matters within the General Counsel Unit.
Key Responsibilities:
- Case Oversight: Collaborate with attorneys to oversee multifaceted litigation cases involving the agency. Ensure meticulous organization of case files, monitor critical deadlines, generate reports, and uphold adherence to judicial protocols. Liaise with both internal and external legal teams to facilitate seamless case advancement.
- Legal Research and Analysis: Execute comprehensive legal research concerning pertinent statutes, regulations, and case precedents. Collect facts, scrutinize evidence, and compile summaries for legal counsel. Partner with investigators and specialists to formulate a robust defense strategy. Conduct legal research, offer legal insights, and draft associated legal documents in compliance with state and federal regulations relevant to the administration of agency programs.
- Document Drafting: Compose and review legal documents, including pleadings, motions, preservation notices, and discovery requests. Prepare responses to information requests and maintain organized indexes of prior filings and case-related documentation.
- Client and Witness Engagement: Conduct interviews with witnesses and gather statements. Communicate effectively with agency personnel, clients, and other stakeholders. Support attorneys during witness preparation for depositions and trials.
- Management of External Counsel: Collaborate closely with outside law firms engaged by the state agency. Oversee relationships, monitor billing practices, and ensure effective cooperation. Facilitate communication between external counsel and internal legal teams.
- Courtroom Assistance: Aid in the preparation for court appearances, including coordinating logistics, organizing exhibits, witness lists, and trial notebooks. Attend court sessions and provide support to attorneys during proceedings.
- Compliance Investigations: Assist in investigations related to agency compliance matters.
This position may allow for remote work within Arizona, contingent upon departmental business needs and ongoing performance expectations.

Selective Preferences:
Possession of an Arizona Driver's License is preferred. A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a legal environment is required. A Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or a related field, and/or a paralegal certificate is preferred. Acceptable certifications include ALP, PLS, CLP, or PP from NALS or CP or AP from NALA, with a strong focus on litigation.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
- Passing a fingerprint background check, employment verifications, and reference checks; employment is contingent upon completion of these processes.
- Travel may be necessary for state business, and employees driving for state purposes must complete required driver training and maintain an acceptable driving record.
