POSITION SUMMARY
Bilingual Youth & Family Support Specialist
San Diego Youth Services is in search of a Bilingual Youth & Family Support Specialist for our HERE Now initiative, focusing on providing essential support to youth and their families. This role is a full-time, non-exempt position under the supervision of the HERE Now Program Manager.
About San Diego Youth ServicesSince 1970, San Diego Youth Services has been dedicated to enhancing the lives of over 780,000 homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth. We offer safe housing solutions and long-term assistance through shelters, foster care, community centers, and housing options, impacting more than 28,000 youth annually across numerous locations. Our approach emphasizes prevention, early intervention, and treatment to assist youth before they require more intensive care or face homelessness.
Our Goals Include:
- Addressing Basic Needs: We prioritize meeting the fundamental needs of youth, including food and shelter, as we provide safe living environments and sustainable solutions.
- Fostering Positive Connections: We support youth in making positive life choices and establishing healthy relationships through essential resources and services.
- Developing Life Skills: We provide a variety of housing options and support to help youth acquire the independent living skills necessary for self-sufficiency.
- Enhancing Overall Well-Being: Our comprehensive services address trauma and challenges, including case management, counseling, mental health support, and educational resources.
With a dedicated team of approximately 215 employees and 80 volunteers, we operate with an annual budget of around $22 million.
PROGRAM FOCUS
The HERE Now program is committed to raising awareness, facilitating discussions, and creating connections to prevent suicide—one community, one school, one life at a time.
ROLE CONTEXT
This position reports to the Program Manager and is responsible for delivering comprehensive, trauma-informed school-based suicide prevention and early intervention services. The Youth & Family Support Specialist will engage families and caregivers in prevention activities, conduct initial risk assessments, and connect youth with mental health resources and other necessary services, particularly for those at risk of suicide or self-harm.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Engaging with diverse groups of middle and high school students (grades 7-12) and their families through a culturally sensitive lens.
- Delivering the Signs of Suicide (SOS) presentation to students and caregivers, sharing personal experiences to build rapport.
- Conducting risk assessments and providing crisis intervention and support services to at-risk youth and families.
- Assisting the Program Manager with documentation for presentations.
- Planning and conducting training sessions for school staff and stakeholders.
- Supporting the Clinical Coordinator in training new staff and volunteers.
- Participating in crisis response and grief counseling as needed.
- Collaborating with school personnel and the community to reduce stigma and improve access to mental health services.
- Maintaining accurate documentation and compliance with program requirements.
- Contributing to the development and evaluation of a trauma-informed approach for youth and families with co-occurring disorders.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• Bilingual proficiency is required. Direct experience as a consumer or caregiver of children’s mental health services or related fields is essential.
• Candidates must be at least 18 years old and possess a High School diploma.
• Familiarity with East and Central County resources is preferred.
• Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment and demonstrate cultural competence.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed care and dual diagnosis treatment is beneficial; experience with at-risk youth is preferred.
• Strong oral and written communication skills are necessary for delivering services to various audiences.
• Availability to work evenings and weekends as required.
• A reliable vehicle and valid auto insurance are required, along with a clean driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Ability to bend, kneel, or crouch to assist students.
• Capability to hear and speak for effective communication and presentations.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds for materials and equipment.
• Capacity to read, prepare, and review various activities while monitoring student engagement.
• Willingness to walk extended distances across campuses.

COMPENSATION
Salary: $18-20 per hour differential
