Position Overview

The University of Minnesota's Research Animal Resources (RAR) department is seeking a dedicated Clinical Veterinarian to deliver preventative, emergency, and routine veterinary medical services for laboratory animals utilized in our accredited research initiatives.

This role involves regular interaction with a diverse group of individuals, including students, staff, faculty, and senior leadership. We are looking for a proactive, motivated, and service-oriented professional to complement our dynamic team of veterinarians and support staff.

In addition to standard clinical responsibilities, the RAR veterinary team plays a crucial role in ensuring regulatory compliance, providing research support, engaging in educational activities, and contributing to process development and implementation. There is also an opportunity for independent or collaborative research.

The team collaborates closely with veterinary students from the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine and actively participates in the Minnesota Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency Consortium. Faculty members are expected to mentor and support residents within the program.

The clinical veterinary team is empowered to identify areas for process enhancements, devise plans for improvement, and initiate steps for successful implementation.

As RAR embarks on an exciting growth trajectory, with upgrades to existing facilities and expansion into new research areas, this position reflects an increase in the number of clinical veterinarians on staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care (40%): Deliver preventative, emergency, and routine veterinary care to research animals. Responsibilities include examining, diagnosing, prescribing medications, performing surgeries, and ensuring humane euthanasia when necessary. Conduct regular rounds of all animals in assigned clinical areas and communicate findings and treatment recommendations to veterinary technicians and research personnel. Provide emergency veterinary services on a rotating basis.
  • Regulatory Compliance Support (15%): Participate in the design and review of research protocols, advising investigators on suitable medications and procedures while ensuring compliance with internal processes.
  • Teaching and Training (15%): Develop and present lectures, labs, and seminars for veterinary students and research staff, and provide training for graduate veterinarians in the laboratory animal medicine training program.
  • Process Development (15%): Identify opportunities for process improvement and assist in implementing changes to enhance training and operational efficiency.
  • Professional Development (10%): Engage in independent or collaborative research projects.
  • Additional Duties (5%): Perform other duties as assigned by the RAR Director and Director of Veterinary Services.

Medical, Physical, & Environmental Requirements

  • Current Tetanus vaccine.
  • Annual Tuberculosis screening.
  • Annual Influenza vaccine.
  • Protective measles titer or vaccination.
  • Rabies vaccine or titer offered.
  • Powered Air Purifying Respirator or N95 Masks may be required.
  • Annual hearing test.
  • Ability to work in various environments and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.

Qualifications

Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent from an AVMA accredited veterinary school, or certification through programs such as ECFVG and PAVE, with at least two years of experience as a practicing veterinarian. Exceptional communication skills, ability to manage multiple tasks, and a valid Minnesota veterinary license within three months of hire.

Preferred: One year or more of experience in laboratory animal medicine, ACLAM Certification or eligibility, and knowledge of federal regulations regarding animal research.
