Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States University of Minnesota Full time
Position Overview

The University of Minnesota's Research Animal Resources (RAR) department is seeking a dedicated Clinical Veterinarian to deliver preventative, emergency, and routine veterinary medical services for laboratory animals involved in our AAALAC-accredited research initiatives.

This role requires regular interaction with diverse personnel, including students, staff, faculty, and senior management. We are looking for a proactive, motivated, and service-oriented individual to integrate into our dynamic team of veterinarians and support staff.

In addition to standard clinical responsibilities, the RAR veterinary team plays a vital role in ensuring regulatory compliance, providing research support, engaging in educational activities, and contributing to process development and implementation. There is also an opportunity for independent or collaborative research endeavors.

The veterinary team collaborates closely with veterinary students from the University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine and actively participates in the Minnesota Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency Consortium. Faculty members are expected to mentor and support residents within the program.

The clinical veterinary team is empowered to identify areas for process enhancement, develop strategies for improvement, and initiate implementation steps. As RAR embarks on an exciting growth trajectory, including facility upgrades and research expansion into gnotobiotics and new non-human primate models, this position reflects an increase in the number of clinical veterinarians on staff.

RAR's veterinary team comprises the institution's attending veterinarian, the director of veterinary services, seven clinical veterinarians, and up to three veterinary residents. Depending on qualifications, some clinical veterinarians may qualify as senior clinical veterinarians.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Care (40%): Deliver preventative, emergency, and routine veterinary care to research animals within the University system. Responsibilities include examining, diagnosing, prescribing medications, performing surgeries, and providing humane euthanasia when necessary. Conduct regular rounds of all animals in assigned clinical areas and communicate findings and treatment recommendations to veterinary technicians and research personnel. Provide emergency veterinary services after hours, on holidays, and weekends on a rotating basis.
  • Regulatory Compliance Support (15%): Engage in the design and review of research protocols, advising investigators on suitable medications, procedures, and model design while ensuring compliance with internal processes regarding animal transportation, housing, and usage.
  • Teaching and Training (15%): Develop and deliver lectures, labs, and seminars for veterinary students and research staff, and provide training for graduate veterinarians in the laboratory animal medicine training program.
  • Process Development and Implementation (15%): Identify opportunities for process improvements and assist in implementing changes, providing feedback on enhancing training at the institution.
  • Professional Development (10%): Participate in independent or collaborative research projects.
  • Additional Duties (5%): The RAR Director and Director of Veterinary Services may assign other duties as necessary.

Medical, Physical, & Environmental Requirements:

  • A current Tetanus vaccine is mandatory.
  • Annual Tuberculosis screening is required.
  • Annual Influenza vaccine is necessary.
  • A protective measles titer or vaccination is required.
  • A rabies vaccine or titer is offered unless a declination form is submitted.
  • Powered Air Purifying Respirator or N95 Masks may be necessary due to exposure to animal allergens.
  • Annual hearing tests are required.
  • Employees may work in wet environments or around large industrial cage washers.
  • Employees may work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds is required.

Qualifications:

Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school, or certification through programs such as ECFVG and PAVE, plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a practicing veterinarian. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently and as part of a team, and demonstrated effectiveness in problem identification and resolution. A license to practice veterinary medicine in Minnesota is required within three months of the start date.

Preferred: One year or more of experience or training in laboratory animal medicine, ACLAM Certification, ACLAM eligibility, or qualifications leading to eligibility, and a working knowledge of federal laws and regulations governing the use of animals in research.

About the Department: Research Animal Resources (RAR) provides the University of Minnesota research community with animal care, procurement services, veterinary expertise, and maintenance of housing facilities for animal-related research activities.

Benefits: The University of Minnesota offers a flexible work environment and a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive wages, paid holidays, generous time off, continuous learning opportunities, low-cost medical, dental, and pharmacy plans, healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts, disability and employer-paid life insurance, and excellent retirement plans with employer contributions.

Employment Requirements: Any offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
