Position: Lead Protection and Control Commissioning Engineer

  • Contract Duration: 6 Months

Position Summary:

The Power Distribution Systems division provides a range of career paths at various levels, reflecting increased scope and responsibility. The Lead Protection and Control Commissioning Engineer is tasked with overseeing the commissioning of modifications or additions to transmission and distribution substations, ensuring that installations are correctly functioning and energized.

This role encompasses the coordination of all testing activities related to apparatus and relays, functional testing, and the documentation of the station's status, including As-Left and As-Built records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to grasp the operational purpose of substations and various protection schemes for effective troubleshooting.
  • Provide oversight during the commissioning of substation installations, which includes developing check-out guides, reviewing test results, and formulating equipment energization plans to mitigate system risks.
  • Utilize engineering expertise to identify and resolve technical issues during both installation and testing phases.
  • Coordinate on-site activities, including the development of work plans, isolation strategies, functional test plans, and final documentation uploads.
  • Identify and rectify design discrepancies.
  • Deliver administrative and technical support for field-related testing and commissioning tasks, managing all aspects of pre-commissioning, field testing, and post-energization activities.
  • Assist electricians in wiring substation protective relaying and control systems, ensuring compliance with design specifications.
  • Support multiple capital projects as a Commissioning Engineer.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant field engineering experience in substations.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Over 10 years of relevant experience in substation field engineering.
  • Certification at Level 3/4 NETA or NICET.
  • Possession of a Professional Engineering License.

Success Criteria:
  • Proven experience in providing field engineering services and technical support for the construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment up to 500kV.
  • Experience with protective relays, relay panels, AC/DC panels, battery systems, breakers, transformers, and other relevant equipment.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively to non-technical personnel.
  • Familiarity with software tools necessary for task performance, including relay test and communication software.
  • Knowledge of safety practices when working with electrical and electronic systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster customer relationships to ensure long-term satisfaction.
  • Willingness to mentor and train technicians and other engineering team members.
  • Compliance with periodic background checks and drug screenings as required.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours during commissioning activities.
  • Valid and unrestricted driver's license is required.
