Position Overview:

Job Title: Security Officer

Location: As Assigned by OPS Administration

Reports To: Building Principal

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: Full-time, 10 month / Non-Exempt, 40 hours per week, 196 days per year

Salary Schedule: This is a negotiated position. Wages are administered consistent with the negotiated agreement.

Position Objective: The Security Officer fosters a culture of student accountability and collaborates with administrators, educators, and staff to ensure the safety of students and personnel, as well as the protection of school facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts regular patrols and monitors hallways, stairwells, restrooms, outdoor areas, and other public or unsupervised locations within the school to ensure the safety and welfare of students and staff, as well as the security of the premises.
  • Facilitates a smooth flow of student traffic in hallways, aiding students in arriving punctually to classes and designated areas.
  • Supervises students during breakfast and lunch periods, as well as during morning arrivals and afternoon dismissals.
  • Assists with traffic management during arrival and dismissal times.
  • Intervenes and removes disruptive students from classes when necessary.
  • Alerts building administration, law enforcement, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergencies, potentially hazardous situations, or unusual occurrences.
  • Supports administrators and staff during crises and emergency situations.
  • Participates in fire drills and other emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Guides visitors with directions and ensures proper identification is secured.
  • Identifies, investigates, and reports unauthorized or suspicious individuals, vehicles, and activities.
  • Challenges unauthorized visitors and escorts them to exits.
  • Encourages student accountability for behavior and attitude by serving as a role model and maintaining a professional appearance.
  • Exhibits ethical and professional conduct while interacting with students, parents, school personnel, and external agencies.
  • Engages in relevant in-service training and workshop programs as directed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities:
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the principal or designated administrative staff.

Equipment: This role requires proficiency in using basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines, while adhering to OPS's guidelines for equipment usage.

Travel: Local travel may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:
  • Operates in standard office and school building environments.
  • Must possess organizational, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret information from written materials and visual displays.
  • Must be able to stand and walk frequently throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to work outdoors during student arrivals and dismissals, as well as for building inspections.
  • Engages in physical activities including reaching overhead, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, climbing, and running as required.
  • Additional demands may be requested by the Supervisor.
Interpersonal Relations:
  • Engages with personnel within the district, students, parents, and the community.
  • Must work effectively with a diverse population, demonstrating tact and diplomacy in all situations.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly and professional manner.
Employee Conduct and Appearance:
  • To ensure effective school operations, employees are expected to fulfill all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours each workday, unless approved leave is granted.
  • Any deviations from assigned hours must receive prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in security-related roles or a combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Law enforcement experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of standard security procedures and best practices in school safety.
  • Experience in an urban public education environment is preferred.
  • Proven experience working with children and youth.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Exhibit integrity and demonstrate strong moral character and initiative.
  • Possess interpersonal skills to effectively relate to students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
Employment Terms:
This position is classified as a full-time non-exempt role. Employment terms will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in Nebraska public schools and Board of Education policies, which may change over time. If represented by a collective bargaining representative, employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that representative.

  • A background check that meets OPS standards for the position.
  • Verification of U.S. citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (if required).
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required).
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination to determine the ability to perform essential job functions safely and effectively.
