Job Summary
The primary objective of this role is to uphold the safety, security, and welfare of the Hamline University campus community. Public Safety Coordinators are responsible for enforcing university policies, as well as state and federal laws, while playing a crucial role in crime prevention.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct foot and vehicle patrols to ensure the safety and security of university grounds.
  • Respond promptly to incidents involving crimes, policy violations, emergencies, and requests for assistance.
  • Collaborate with local police, fire, and emergency services.
  • De-escalate disruptive situations and, when necessary, detain individuals engaged in criminal activities or actions that threaten the safety of the campus community.
  • Prepare detailed narrative and investigative reports.
  • Enforce university policies and applicable laws.
  • Complete designated training courses within the specified timeframe.
  • Respond to life safety system alarms and oversee building evacuations.
  • Provide professional assistance for various service requests.
  • Utilize security technology systems effectively, including CCTV and alarm systems.
  • Enforce trespass orders when appropriate.
  • Act as a Campus Security Authority as required by relevant legislation.
  • Support special events as directed by department leadership.
  • Complete driver training and operate university vehicles safely as needed.
  • Maintain required medical certifications within the specified timeframe.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Reporting Structure
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Safety and Security and does not supervise other employees or student workers.

Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with basic computer programs.
  • Ability to respond effectively to dynamic and stressful situations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Associate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in security within a higher education setting.

Working Conditions
This role requires the ability to work outdoors in various seasonal conditions and respond to diverse hazards. The position may involve physical activities such as lifting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
