Lead Engineer for Aerospace Ceramic Composites

Evendale, Ohio, United States GE Aviation Full time

Job Overview
This position is part of the Commercial Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team within GE Aviation's Engineering Division.

The team is tasked with the creation and enhancement of CMC components utilized in the High-Pressure

  • Turbine (HPT) and Combustor Module of the GE9X and LEAP Commercial Turbofan engines.
As the Advanced Lead Engineer, you will be instrumental in spearheading and supporting initiatives aimed at durability and fleet support for CMC HPT components.

Key Responsibilities
You will take on the role of an individual contributor, driving design and manufacturing modifications to align with program specifications. Your collaboration with cross-functional teams, including mechanical design and analysis, materials engineering, data science, manufacturing, quality, and program management, will be essential.

Implementing lessons learned from previous programs and new fleet insights into the subsequent iterations of component design will be a critical aspect of your responsibilities.

Additional duties may encompass supporting component delivery efforts, assisting with engine test assemblies, and enhancing component manufacturability through design and production modifications.

Your technical acumen will be vital in refining existing processes and designs, while also providing guidance to early-career engineers and manufacturing professionals.

In this role, you will enjoy a significant degree of autonomy, necessitating ownership of the quality of your work and contributing to the establishment of your priorities.

While executing your tasks, it will be important to evaluate your capabilities and seek advice from your supervisor and technical mentors when required.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to significantly influence the design and innovation of GE Aviation's products.

Essential Duties
Develop a comprehensive understanding of hot section design, CMC design, and module integration.

Gain insights into how your team's work contributes to our commercial programs, future initiatives, and the CMC Integrated Product Team (IPT).

Maintain awareness of market trends, competitive landscape, and product differentiation.

Utilize sound judgment to propose various solutions beyond established parameters to tackle design and manufacturing challenges.

Employ on-the-job training and prior experience to address tasks effectively. Access the technical skills and analytical thinking necessary for problem-solving, potentially utilizing multiple internal resources outside your immediate team to make informed decisions.

Manage project plans and action items for achieving component durability maturation objectives. Lead small teams to ensure the completion of deliverables. Communicate scheduling pressures and delegate tasks as needed.

Determine engineering requirements for manufacturing while considering manufacturing capabilities. Develop corrective actions for manufacturing non-conformance, weighing the advantages and disadvantages of altering manufacturing processes versus establishing sound engineering substantiation. Leverage fleet learnings, component test history, and comparative analysis to inform corrective action strategies.

Articulate technical challenges and requirements to other teams. Utilize historical documentation of engine test findings and fleet performance, design practices, and innovative analysis to drive substantial engineering changes.

Receive feedback on results from peers and technical experts, documenting significant findings with technical rigor.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM field from an accredited institution, with 6+ years of relevant engineering experience, OR an Advanced degree in the same fields with 4+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities; experience in influencing and guiding small teams.
Excellent communication and technical documentation skills.
Proven capability to manage multiple projects concurrently with demonstrated project management expertise.
Effective problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to make sound risk-based decisions.
Experience mentoring others in resolving complex issues.
Familiarity with hardware ownership, jet engines, hot section design, and/or combustor design.
Proficiency in CAD software (Unigraphics NX), GD&T, and assembly stack-ups.
Prior involvement with RCCAs/TOPS8Ds and composite design or manufacturing experience.
Experience with non-conformance review or Material Review Board (MRB) processes.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. Final offers may be contingent upon obtaining authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
