Position Overview:

The Psychiatric Advanced Practice Fellowship is a comprehensive 12-month initiative aimed at enhancing mental health services for underserved communities. This program is designed for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who are eager to engage in a structured educational experience that fosters the development of advanced clinical decision-making skills and the application of specialized competencies in managing patients with mental health disorders through hands-on training and guided clinical practice.

Program Objectives:

This fellowship provides specialized healthcare services within a defined practice scope, collaborating closely with licensed psychiatrists and adhering to established institutional policies and procedures.

The program represents a collaborative academic effort involving prominent institutions, offering a rich, longitudinal transition to practice experience in mental health care focused on underserved populations. Participants will engage in interdisciplinary team experiences throughout various life stages, encompassing core clinical rotations in diverse outpatient environments and inpatient care, alongside elective rotations in specialized settings and educational experiences.

Work Schedule: Flexibility is required for clinical rotations that encompass both inpatient and outpatient care.

Fellowship Expectations and Learning Outcomes:

  • Advanced Assessment: Skillfully gathers, selects, and integrates information to care for patients with acute, critical, or complex chronic conditions using physiological, technological, and pharmacological insights.
  • Differential Diagnosis: Accurately identifies and prioritizes actual and potential conditions based on available data and the complexity of the patient's condition.
  • Outcomes Identification: Establishes goals and outcomes informed by scientific evidence that align with the patient's preferences and capabilities.
  • Care Planning: Develops, prescribes, and/or modifies a comprehensive, outcomes-focused care plan in collaboration with an interprofessional team, addressing health care needs that may be restorative, curative, rehabilitative, or palliative.
  • Treatment Implementation: Identifies, prescribes, performs, or delegates therapeutic interventions.
  • Care Evaluation: Continuously assesses the effectiveness of the care plan, recognizing patient responses to therapy and adjusting based on changes in condition and team recommendations.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conducts thorough histories and psychiatric evaluations, identifying both normal and abnormal findings across physical, cognitive, and psychosocial domains.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests and laboratory results.
  • Formulates both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment strategies.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of the implemented care plan.
  • Educates patients regarding their health conditions and treatment options.
  • Performs procedures as trained and credentialed.
  • Maintains accurate documentation within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes necessary administrative paperwork.
  • Collaborates and consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
  • Provides education, counseling, and support to patients and families regarding health issues, maintenance activities, and preventive measures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Nurse Practitioners:

Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's or Doctoral Program is required. Candidates must possess National Board Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, Geriatric-Adult Nurse Practitioner, or Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at the start of the program and hold licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in Wisconsin. Eligibility for DEA licensure and a satisfactory criminal background check are also required.

Physician Assistants/Associates:

Completion of an accredited Physician Associate's master's program is required. Candidates must possess NCCPA certification at the start of the program and hold licensure as a Physician Assistant in Wisconsin. Eligibility for DEA licensure and a satisfactory criminal background check are also required.

Only candidates currently enrolled in or who have completed an accredited NP/PA program will be considered for acceptance.
